PhillyCollegeSports.com Players of the Week – Mouphtaou Yarou, Villanova and Anthony Lee, Temple
Mouphtaou Yarou turned in two strong performances for Villanova in games against South Florida and Syracuse. Yarou registered a double-double in each game, 16 points and 13 rebounds against USF and 11 points and 14 rebounds against the Orange. Yarou was the leading scorer and rebounder in the game at South Florida and was the game-high rebounder at Syracuse.
Anthony Lee registered a double-double in the home game against Saint Louis getting 20 points and 10 rebounds. At Xavier Lee scored 15 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. For the week Lee averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

LA SALLE 11 – 4 Overall, 1 – 1 Atlantic 10, 2 – 0 Big Five
Results – Lost at Charlotte 74 – 65, Won 71 – 59 vs. Richmond at the Gola Arena
Summary –
Charlotte 74 LaSalle 65 – In the conference opener LaSalle fell behind early in the game, but cut a 16-point halftime deficit to 6 with just over two minutes to play. The Explorers got no closer as they fall on the road. LaSalle struggled from beyond the arc making just 4 of 29 for the game, 1 of 13 in the first half. The Explorers were 25 of 77 from the floor (32.5%) for the game. Ramon Galloway was the leading scorer in the game with 23 points. Tyreek Duren scored 12 points and Jerrell Wright had 11. Charlotte made 25 of 52 field goal attempts (48.1%).
LaSalle 71 Richmond 65 – The Explorers got strong inside play outscoring the Spiders 48 – 24 in the paint to take their Atlantic 10 home opener. Forwards Jerrell Wright and Steve Zack combined to make 11 of 14 field goal attempts. Wright finished with 12 points and Zack contributed 11 points. LaSalle was 28 – 60 (46.7%) for the game. Tyrone Garland led all scorers with 17 points while Tyreek Duren scored 15. Duren also registered 4 of the Explorers 8 steals.

PENN – 2 – 13 Overall, 0 – 1 Ivy League, 0 – 2 Big Five
Results – Lost 85 – 83 vs. Lafayette at the Palestra, Lost at Princeton 65 – 53
Summary –
Lafayette 85 Penn 83 – The Red and Blue erased a 15-point
deficit over the last 8 minutes, but could not move in front falling to the Leopards by two. Penn had a chance to win the game at the end, but Steve Rennard could not convert an open three from the corner as time ran out. Dau Jok scored a career-high 18 points. Darien Nelson-Henry also posted a career-best scoring 17 points. Tony Hicks had 11 and Greg Louis 10 points to round out the double-figures scorers for the Quakers. Lafayette Coach Fran O’Hanlon, a former Penn assistant, picked up his first Palestra win as Lafayette Coach.
Princeton 65 Penn 53 – The Tigers opened the game with an 11 – 4 lead and did not look back against their Ivy League rivals. Princeton opened the second half with an 11 – 0 run to take command of the game doubling up Penn 44 – 22. The Quakers cut the lead to ten points twice, but got no closer. Tony Hicks led Penn with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Darien Nelson-Henry added 11 points. No other Penn player scored in double-figures. Princeton’s T.J. Bray hit six treys in his game-high 23 points.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 9 – 5 Overall, 1 – 1 Atlantic 10, 0 – 1 Big Five
Results – Lost 72 – 66 vs. #14 Butler, Won 74 – 66 at Duquesne
Summary –
#14 Butler 72 Saint Joseph’s 66 – The Hawks came up short against nationally ranked Butler in their conference opener at the Hagan Arena. Saint Joseph’s held a 51 – 46 lead at the 15:04 mark, but would miss the next 10 field goal attempts. That allowed Butler to go on a 15 – 6 run to take a 61 – 56 lead with 6:12 on the clock. The Hawks would not go away and pulled to within 63 – 61 at the 5:01 mark, but went cold again making 2 of their last 8 shots as Butler earned the victory. Chris Wilson led Saint Joe’s with 15 points all scored in the first half. C.J. Aiken scored 13 points. Ronald Roberts scored 12 points while pulling down 9 rebounds and blocking 4 shots. Langston Galloway added 11 points. Rotnei Clarke scored a game-high 28 points, and Andrew Smith scored 24 points and 10 rebounds for Butler.
Saint Joseph’s 74 Duquesne 66 – Ronald Roberts recorded his 6th double-double of the season (13 points and 11 rebounds) as the Hawks bounced back from the disappointment against Butler with a road win at Duquesne. Saint Joseph’s led wire to wire. Still the Hawks led 66 – 64 before Langston Galloway hit a jumper to give his team a 4-point lead with 2:04 to play. Galloway made an eight-footer at the 1:04 mark gave the Hawks a 70 – 64 lead. He led all scorers with 16 points. Carl Jones scored 15 points and handed out 4 assists. Chris Wilson scored 12 points. C.J. Aiken set a season-high with 7 blocked shots.

TEMPLE 11 – 4 Overall, 1 – 1 Atlantic 10, 1 – 0 Big Five
Results – Lost 57 – 52 at Xavier, Won 64 – 54 vs. Saint Louis at the Liacouris Center
Summary –
Xavier 57 Temple 52 – The Owls could not overcome a cold shooting first half. Temple scored a season-fewest 26 points in the first half as they left the floor with a 3 point deficit. The Cherry and White opened the second half with a 9 – 0 run to move in front 35 – 29. Xavier responded by scoring 19 of the next 21 points propelling Xavier to their biggest lead at 48 -37. Temple answered with a run of their own to close to within two points at 48 – 46 with 5:39 to play. Xavier still held a two-point advantage at the 1:31 mark. After a Xavier free throw the Owls had two chances to tie, but Khalif Wyatt and Scootie Randall missed on three-pointers. Xavier put the game away at the free throw line. Anthony Lee had a team-high 15 points and added 7 rebounds. Randall added 13 points and Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson scored 11 points. Wyatt was held to 5 points on 2 – 11 shooting.
Temple 64 Saint Louis 54 – The Owls broke their two-game losing streak winning their first conference game of the season at home over the Billikens. Khalif Wyatt bounced back scoring 24 points making 7 of 11 from the floor and 3 of 4 three-pointers. Anthony Lee continued his strong scoring with 20 points and contributed 10 rebounds. The Cherry and White limited Saint Louis to 34.5% shooting (20 – 58) and only 4 of 21 from distance. Saint Louis guards Kwamain Mitchell, Mike McCall, and Jordair Jett 15 points on 4 of 22 field goal attempts.
Anthony Lee was named the Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Week.

VILLANOVA 11 – 5 Overall, 2 – 1 Big East, 2 – 2 Big Five
Results – Won 61 – 50 at South Florida, Lost 72 – 61 at #7 Syracuse
Summary –
Villanova 61 South Florida 50 – The Wildcats had a strong performance near the basket out scoring USF 30 – 14 in the paint. 15 offensive rebounds gave Villanova 17 – 2 advantage in Second Chance points. Villanova had a 14-point halftime lead at 34 – 20 and never looked back. Mouphtaou Yarou led the Wildcats with a double-double, 16 points and 13 rebounds. JayVaughn Pinkston added 15 points, and Daniel Ochefu had 12 points.
#7 Syracuse 72 Villanova 61 – The Wildcats played Syracuse close, but faltered near the end in their final Big East game against the Orange at the Carrier Dome. Villanova had a 29 – 27 halftime lead. In the second half Syracuse took the lead. Villanova got back to within 44 -43 before Syracuse went on an 8 – 0 run to take control. The Wildcats made 32% of their shots (8 of 25) in the second half while the Orange heated up hitting 12 of 22 in the latter stanza. Mouphtaou Yarou recorded another double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. JayVaughn Pinkston scored a team-high 12 points. C.J. Fair had a game-high 22 for the Orange.

DREXEL 5 – 11 Overall, 1 – 3 CAA
Results – Lost 63 – 58 (OT) vs. Northeastern at the DAC, Lost at James Madison 51 – 43
Summary –
Northeastern 63 Drexel 58 (OT) – With just 1.9 seconds on the clock Quincy Ford made an off-balance three to tie the game for Northeastern. The Huskies outscored the Dragons 16 – 11 in the overtime resulting in another conference loss for Drexel. The host Dragons had a chance to win the game in regulation leading 47 – 43 with just over a minute remaining. Tavon Allen missed a three-pointer with 16 seconds on the clock. Northeastern got possession setting up Ford’s heroics. Frantz Massenat scored 19 points for Drexel, 14 in the second half. Allen, starting in place of an injured Damion Lee, scored 15 points and had a career-high 8 rebounds. Dartaye Ruffin pulled down 9 rebounds to give him 500 for his career.
James Madison 51 Drexel 43 – The Dragons tied the game at 38 with 4:43 on the clock, but JMU answered with a 10 – 0 run to send Drexel to their third straight defeat. The Dragons played without Damion Lee and Daryl McCoy who missed the game with injuries. Drexel held JMU to 37% shooting, but only converted 36% from the floor. Frantz Massenat led the way for the Dragons with 13 points. Allen scored Dartaye Ruffin had 8 points each. Kazembe Abif pulled down 9 rebounds.
