Week Three Edition
September 20, 2026 –
North Carolina State – This can’t happen. But it did. One person on social media called it the dumbest play ever in college football. He might be right. The Wolfpack was up 3 with 6 seconds left at Vanderbilt, where they never trailed and were trying to beat an SEC team on the road for the first time on the road in the since the late 1970’s. They had the ball on their own 5-yard line, facing fourth and 7. They didn’t want to risk a blocked punt, so they shotgun snapped to the quarterback in the endzone to take an intentional safety. Of course, they could have just snapped the ball out of the end zone. But no. The quarterback, who for whatever reason tried to run some more time off the clock, was hit and fumbled before he could take a knee. Oops. He fumbled while being tackled and Vandy recovered for a TD. The extra point made it 35 – 31. The line was three and a half. Can’t make that up. Hope you didn’t have the Wolves. Somebody has some explaining to do.
Texas A&M — Ninth-ranked team was home, favored by 17 oveet Kentucky. Lost 31-21. So now probably won’t be going back to playoffs.
Virginia — Favored by 10 at home against West Virginia. Cavs were No. 25. They lost, 38-27. At least it was a non-conference game.
Colorado — Was a 3-point underdog at fellow unbeaten Northwestern. Lost 41-7, which is likely too much. At least for me.
Lane Kiffin — Not for anything his LSU did or did not do at Ole Miss. The Tigers actually fought back to the end to make it a great game. This is about who he is and what he represents. He created all the circumstances that made this game so anticipated for nine months. Snd only he didn’t seem to get any of it, which is why few outside the state of NOLA were shedding any tears for how it turned out. Or probably ever will. And that’s OK. His team could still go real far, as could Ole Miss. And his new program could give him a better chance to win a national title. But for one day, at least, he chose the wrong school.
Dishonorable Mentions:
Temple — Hate to do this to Owls, largely cause I’m a K.C. Keeler guy.
And this game would have been such a good win early in his second season on North Broad. As a TD dog they led by 14 at Toledo late. But the Rocks scored with just over a minute to go and then recovered an onsides kick and scored again in just two plays. So the Owls lost in overtime, 49-48, when they missed a 2-point conversion pass. And I had no problem with the decision or the call cause by that point his defense was probably gassed. Just a shame it had to come down to that, after they led almost the whole way. Just hope this isn’t the result that maybe keeps them out of a bowl game, which is what happened last year when they lost late to Navy. Also on a 2-pointer that was made. We will see.
Southern Mississippi — Was a 3-point home dog to UConn. Lost 48-20. Which seems excessive. But I know nobody cares. And that’s OK too. It happens.
Southern Cal —This is a reach but so what? I’m allowed. I checked the rulebook just in case. Trojans were favored by three TDs plus at Rutgers, which of course stinks. But we all know USC doesn’t win east of the Mississippi. So I took the Knights. Final was 42-35. Rutgers could never get ball back after scoring with 4 and a half minutes left. USC is at Penn State on Oct. 10. Just saying.
