Villanova Wins 76 – 70 Over Boston College
VILLANOVA, PA 3/20/2025 –
The Villanova Wildcats returned to the court for the first round of the WBIT. The Wildcats advance downing the Boston College Eagles 76 – 70 at the Finneran Pavilion. The season continues as the second round game on Sunday is not far away. The Saint Joseph’s Hawks await. Both teams met in the quarterfinals last season on the Main Line. This time they play on City Line. More on that later.
Freshman guard Jasmine Bascoe led the Wildcats with a game-high 24 points making 10 of 15 field goal attempts, 2 of 4 from beyond the arc, and handed out a team-best 4 assists. Bascoe has topped the 20-point mark in 8 games this season, and she was ready and excited for the postseason.
“It was exhilarating tonight,” said Bascoe. “We want to keep this going as far as we can. I don’t want the season to be over yet. Just keep playing, keep pushing. I was excited. It’s been a long season, but now that we’re here, we may as well go all the way.”
Villanova Closed the Inside in the Second Half
In the first half Boston College got 24 of their 38 points in the paint. In the latter half the Eagles were limited to 12 paint points. BC felt they could get to the basket off the dribble. The Wildcats did respond by pressuring the ball a little more to force the offense to start a little father out. But the defense really succeeded by playing team defense.
“I felt everyone honed in on their particular assignment, as opposed to playing the team defense that we emphasize,” said Villanova Coach Denise Dillon. “I think that reminder helped, and it gave us crowd the paint a little bit better as the game progressed, and it wasn’t just relying on the one on one coverage. Get into the gaps and crowd the ball a little bit more forcing more movement.”
What the Numbers Say
Ryanne Allen tied her career-high scoring 17 points draining 5 of 11 from the floor, and made 3 of 6 three pointers. Allen was an amazing plus-25 in the game.
“When I get into the game I want to do whatever I can to help the team,” said Allen. “Hit the shots I need to make, make the extra pass, get a rebound. I want to do whatever I can to help the team come out and get a W.”
Maddie Webber also broke double-digits scoring 12 points. Of the ten players who were on the floor for Villanova nine scored. Multiple contributions led to 34 bench points, a season-high.
The Wildcats outrebounded the Eagles 41 – 24 with a 13 – 12 advantage in offensive rebounds.
“The biggest stat that we are most excited about, it’s just been a challenge for us is the rebounding piece,” said Dillon. “We had 13 offensive rebounds. BC is a great rebounding team. I think they were first in the ACC and offensive rebounds, top 15 in the country. That’s a win for us.”
Teya Sidberry led Boston College with 21 points and a game-best 8 rebounds. Savannah Samuel contributed 16 points tying her season-best.

“I thought only Philly people knew about this rivalry, seems like it’s nationwide,” Dillon said. “Last year them coming to our place for round three, and now us having to go there for round two. It certainly makes for great competitive basketball. I know both teams are going to be prepared. You just got to come out and give everything you have on both ends of the floor.”
