The Fraud Five by Mike Kern – Week Seven

Mike Kern’s Fraud Five

October 13, 2024

I was tempted to include the Phillies, for all the obvious reasons. But it almost seemed predictable. And maybe I’m getting softer in my older age. Perhaps next year. Anyway …

Maryland — Terps were favored by 10 at home against Northwestern. They lost, 37-10.

Rutgers — Knights played Wisconsin at home, in what was basically a pick em. They lost, 42-7. And just when I was beginning to like them.

Utah — The Utes were ranked 16th, and favored by 4 at Arizona State, which admittedly has been one of the early-season surprises. They lost, 27-19. Had the ball inside the ASU 30 seven times. Scored one touchdown.

Kentucky — Wildcats were hosting Vanderbilt, which was coming off that stunner at Alabama. They were still favored by a dozen. The visitors won another one, 20-13.

Toledo — My Toledo friend told me that 10 points was too much for the Rockets to be giving at Buffalo. He was right. Final was 30-15, which seems like way more than too much.

Dishonorable Mention:

Washington, which was a slight underdog at Iowa. Huskies were coming off a nice win over Michigan. But they lost, 40-16, which again seems a bit too egregious. And how many times does Iowa score that many, maybe even in a good month? Yet the much-maligned Hawkeyes scored 23 straight points in one nearly 30-minute stretch. Good thing the visitors got a real late TD.
