Dartmouth Melts the Clock to Hold Off Penn in Ivy Opener

The Quakers Drop the League Opener 20 – 17 to the Big Green

The football rivalry between the University of Pennsylvania and Dartmouth is becoming heavy duty, especially since it is the league opener for both schools. The winner gets a leg up in the Ancient Eight standings. In a back and forth game where each team was within a possession of each other. Dartmouth held on for a 20 -17 win at Buddy Teevens Stadium.

The Critical Dartmouth Fourth Quarter Drive

A 43-yard field goal by Sam Smith pulled the Red and Blue to within 3 with 10:41 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Quakers looked to the defense to hold, and give the offense a chance to retake the lead. That did not happen. The Big Green took over at their 25 yard line. They did not give up the ball until 11 seconds remained. The 20-play, 74 yard drive taking 10:30 decided the issue. Penn made a goal line stand to deny Dartmouth the points. But more importantly, the Big Green denied the Quakers the ball.

Dartmouth used 6 pass plays and 25 running plays in melting the clock and had 6 first downs in that stretch. On third down the Big Green converted 5 of 6 chances. The one they did not convert led to the fourth down try that Penn stopped.

With 11 seconds to play the offense at the one-yard line, the advanced it only 19-yards.

Hosley Leads the Offense

Running back Malachi Hosley the Quakers offense with 82 rushing yards on 15 carries and caught a pass for 22 yards. He scored twice. His 1-yard touchdown run at 1:55 before halftime gave Penn a 14 – 10 lead. His streak of 5 consecutive 100-yard games came to an end.

Through the air quarterback Aidan Sayin was good on 11 of 27 passes for 123 yards.

It was hard to generate offense when having the ball for for 22:33 total, and just 8:27 in the second half.

Dartmouth With the Ball

Quarterback Jackson Proctor threw for 232 yards with 2 touchdowns. Q Jones was a factor on the ground running for 101 yards on 22 carries with his longest being a 33-yard run. Desmin Jackson ran for 98 yards with 42 being his lonest scamper. Paxton Scott and Chris Corbo caught the scoring tosses. Dartmouth possessed the ball for 37:27, and 21:33 in the second half. This helped to allow the Big Green to generate 439 total offensive yards on 73 plays to 52 for the Red and Blue.

Dartmouth looked in prime position to put the game away. From the one-yard line Jones took the ball but did not find the endzone. He ran into Jack Fairman and Shiloh Means instead.

Fairman made 9 tackles. Kadari Machen led the team with a game-best 15 stops. John Lista recorded 8 tackles.

Penn stands 1 – 2 overall 0 – 1 in the Ivy League. The Red and Blue plays their final non-conference game at home next week against Bucknell. Dartmouth improves to 3 – 0, 1 – 0 in conference.
