Penn and Drexel Going to the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championships

West Philadelphia Is Going Dancing as Penn and Drexel Earn Tournament Bids

May 8, 2023 –

Sunday was a big day for the University City teams. The University of Pennsylvania won the Ivy League Tournament at home by a 15 – 14 score in overtime. The Quakers knew they were going. Drexel had to wait for the selection show where they saw their invitation as an at-large entry.

Penn will face the UConn Huskies, an at-large entrant, in the first round. The game will be played on the campus of Boston College on Friday at 1 PM. Neither team faced each other before. The winner faces the #3 seed Boston College on Sunday. The Quakers will make their 16th appearance in the tournament, but their first since 2019.

Drexel fell in the semifinal round of the CAA Tournament, but the selection committee felt their 12 – 5 record was worthy of a bid. The team was bolstered by a win over nationally ranked Johns Hopkins, and the Dragons won 7 of their last 8 regular season games. Drexel faces the nationally ranked Maryland Terrapins on Friday at 5 PM on the campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. The winner will play the winner of the James Madison vs. Army game on Sunday.

The Dragons played the Terrapins in February. The Terrapins, ranked #6 at the time, won that game 15 – 9.

Northwestern was selected as the top-seed overall finishing 17 – 1 and winning the Big Ten. Syracuse got the second seed. After Boston College, North Carolina was awarded seed #4. The ACC has 3 of the top four seeds.

The national semifinal will be played at the Town of Cary’s WakeMed Soccer Park on Friday, May 26. The final is scheduled for Sunday, May 28 at noon.
