Philly D1 Women’s Soccer Weekly Wrap – Games of October 17 – 23

October 25, 2022 –

Drexel Finishes the Regular Season, Will be #2 Seed in CAA Tournament; Saint Joseph’s Earns the 6th Seed in the Atlantic 10; Villanova Still Alive for Final Big East Playoff Spot

The Drexel Dragons ended the regular season with a 2 – 1 win at Delaware. The Dragons got two scores in the first 20 minutes by Anna Salvucci and Annalena O’Reilly, who assisted on the Salvucci goal. Drexel finishes with 10 victories. This is the third time in program history that the team finished with 10 wins in a single season….The Saint Joseph’s Hawks split the week, but earned the 6th seed in the Atlantic 10 tournament. It is the eighth time in the last nine seasons for the Hawks making the conference postseason. The Hawks clinched the spot with a 3 – 1 win over George Washington University. Nicole Angelini got the scoring started with a goal at 1:01. Katie Cappelletti made 7 saves. At #11 Saint Louis Cappelletti saved 8 in a 4 – 0 loss….The Villanova Wildcats posted a win and a tie over the week in a two-game homestand. The Wildcats played to a scoreless draw with the UConn Huskies, then won 2 – 1 over DePaul. Nova scored on two penalty kicks. Emma Weaver got the game-winner at 81:29. Cici Fox got the initial Villanova goal. Postseason play is still within reach….The University of Pennsylvania lost 1 – 0 at Yale who scored in the 27th minute. Penn is still looking for their first Ivy League win. They have lost their last three games by one goal….The season ended for the La Salle Explorers as they did not qualify for the Atlantic 10 Tournament. La Salle tied George Mason University 1 – 1, then fell in the season finale at home 1 – 0 to Davidson who got the goal at 12:01. Haley Gschrey scored on a header in the Mason game to give LSU a lead….The Temple Owls fell in two league games over the week. The Cherry and White have one game left to play, but are eliminated from earning a conference tournament spot. The Owls lost 2 – 0 in Florida against the USF Bulls, then dropped a 2 – 1 decision on Senior Day to the ECU Pirates. Emily Kavanaugh tied the ECU game at 48:04 but lost it on a Carsen Parker penalty kick at 74:18. Parker scored both goals for the Pirates.

Drexel hosts William & Mary at Vidas Field in a CAA postseason match. Saint Joseph’s battles VCU in Richmond in the A10 Quarterfinals. The regular season continues for Penn who hosts Brown. Villanova goes to Providence and Temple travels to Houston. The La Salle season comes to an end.

Games of October 17 – October 23, 2022

DREXEL 10 – 2 – 5 Overall, 5 – 2 – 2 CAA

Results – Won 2 – 1 at Delaware

Summary – Molly Piso made 6 saves in the game against the Blue Hens. Delaware got more shots and shots on goal 8 – 7 and 7 – 4.

Next Game – October 27 vs. William & Mary in the CAA Quarterfinals at Vidas Field

LA SALLE 8 – 8 – 2 Overall, 3 – 6 – 1 Atlantic 10

Results – Tied 1 – 1 at George Mason University, Lost 1 – 0 vs. Davidson

Summary – Mason tied the game at the 60-minute mark. La Salle finished in 10th place with 10 points.

Next Game – 2023 Season Opener

PENN  3 – 4 – 7 Overall, 0 – 3 – 2 Ivy League

Results– Lost 1 – 0 at Yale

Summary – Penn had the better of the offensive stats, 12 – 6 in shots. Sizzy Lawton recorded 4 shots. Both teams put 2 shots on net. The Bulldogs got the one that counted the most.

Next Game – October 29 vs. Brown at Rhodes Field

SAINT JOSEPH’S  4 – 7 – 7 Overall, 3 – 2 – 5 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 3 – 1 vs. George Washington University, Lost 4 – 0 at #11 Saint Louis

Summary – Natalie Nevins and Jiselle Daniels also recorded goals in the GWU game. The Billikens outshot the Hawks 24 – 8 with a 12 – 2 edge in shots on goal.

Next Game – October 28 at VCU in the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinal Round

TEMPLE 1 – 10 – 4 Overall, 0 – 7 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 2 – 0 at USF, Lost 2 – 1 vs. ECU

Summary – Kyla Burns made 17 saves over the week. She saved 6 in the ECU game. At USF Burns had 11 saves, 6 in the first half, 5 in the second. Temple was outshot 37 -11, and 23 – 6 in shots on goal.

Next Game – October 27 at Houston

VILLANOVA 4 – 8 – 3 Overall, 3 – 5 – 1

Results – Tied 0 – 0 vs. UConn, Won 2 – 1 vs. DePaul

Summary – Goalie Megan McClay posted her third shutout of the season and made 7 saves against Connecticut. She saved 12 shots over the week.

Next Game – October 27 at Providence
