Philly D1 Women’s Soccer Weekly Wrap – Games of October 3rd – 9th

Drexel Posts and Win and a Tie, Saint Joseph’s and La Salle Get Atlantic 10 Victories

The Drexel Dragons had an active week winning at Hofstra 3 – 2, then tied 4 – 4 against Stony Brook. The tie represented the most goals scored and most given up by the Dragons. Delaney Lappin scored in each game and has 10 to become the third player in program history scoring double-digit goals in a single season. Isabel Kuzy got the golden goal against Hofstra at 74:49 where Drexel came from behind twice to win, the first time they beat the Pride since 2016. Stony Brook scored twice in the last 9:05 with the equalizer coming with 6 seconds left on the clock….In Atlantic 10 play the La Salle Explorers beat Fordham 3 – 1 behind a natural hat trick by Kelli McGroarty. All goals came in the first half over a seven-minute span….The Saint Joseph’s Hawks defeated Loyola of Chicago when Ashley Orendac scored her first goal of the season at the 82:40 mark. The Hawks remain unbeaten in conference play….The University of Pennsylvania lost its first game this season in the Ancient Eight 2 – 1 at home to Columbia. Penn took a one-goal lead at 61:50 when Sizzy Lawton scored her 4th goal of the season. Kat Jordan won it for Columbia converting a penalty kick in the 82nd minute….The Villanova Wildcats fell twice getting shutout on the road at Butler and Creighton. Goalie Megan McClay made 6 saves in each game. Butler got the game-winner by Caitlyn O’Malley in the 86th minute….The Temple Owls are still in search of their first American Athletic Conference win losing 2 – 0 at home to UCF, then fell at Cincinnati 3 – 1. Carly Steinberg found the back of the net for the Owls at 60:28, but was not enough to overcome two Bearcats goals scored in the first 20 minutes.

The conference battles are heating up. Only Villanova will be at home hosting Georgetown. Drexel heads to Boston to play Northeastern. Penn is in Vermont taking on Dartmouth. Temple heads south for a game with Memphis. The Explorers and the Hawks will be on I-95 South. Saint Joe’s meets George Mason University, while La Salle heads to Richmond for a match against the Spiders.

Games of October 4 – October 9, 2022

DREXEL 9 – 1 – 4 Overall, 4 – 1 – 1 CAA

Results – Won 3 – 2 at Hofstra, Tied 4 – 4 vs. Stony Brook

Summary – Annalena O’Reilly scored in the Hofstra game, her 6th of the season, her fifth straight game posting a point. In the Stony Brook game Drexel got additional goals from Casey Touey and Gabrielle Perrotto.

Next Game – October 13 at Northeastern

LA SALLE 7 – 6 – 1 Overall, 2 – 4 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 3 – 1 at Fordham

Summary – McGroarty has a team-best 6 goals and 16 points.

Next Game – October 13 at Richmond

PENN  3 – 2 – 7 Overall, 0 – 1 – 2 Ivy League

Results– Lost 2 – 1 vs. Columbia

Summary – Goalie Laurence Gladu made 6 saves. Penn was outshot 13 – 4, 8 – 3 on goal.

Next Game – October 15 at Dartmouth

SAINT JOSEPH’S  3 – 5 – 6 Overall, 2 – 0 – 4 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. Loyola of Chicago

Summary – The Hawks are tied for 7th place in the conference with 10 points. Katie Cappelletti got her 13th career shutout. Each team had 3 shots on goal. The Hawks had 12 shots and the Ramblers sent off 9.

Next Game – October 13 at George Mason

TEMPLE 1 – 7 – 4 Overall, 0 – 4 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 2 – 0 vs. UCF, Lost 3 – 1 at Cincinnati

Summary – The Knights scored goals by Mallory Olsson in the 60th minute. The Owls got 5 shots on goal by five different players. Over the week Temple had 9 shots, 8 were on goal. But the Cherry and White faced 38 total shots 15 on goal.

Next Game – October 16 at Memphis

VILLANOVA 3 – 6 – 2 Overall, 2 – 3 – 0

Results – Lost 1 – 0 at Butler, Lost 2 – 0 at Creighton

Summary – The Wildcats gave up 46 shots, 30 to Butler and 16 to Creighton. The shots on goal differential total 15 – 2 was in favor of the opponents. Nova got off two shots in each contest.
