La Salle Gets the Sole Win of the Week in a Battle Against Saint Joseph’s, Drexel Clinches a CAA Tournament Berth

The La Salle Explorers and the Saint Joseph’s Hawks met at 20th and Olney is a city battle. The Explorers won 1 – 0 on a goal by Ricshya Walker at the 44:06 mark. The win is number 300 in La Salle program history. It was an even game with both teams having the same number of shots at 8 and shots on goal with 4 apiece. Earlier in the week La Salle fell 2 – 0 at Richmond….Saint Joseph’s concluded a scoreless week tying George Mason University 0 – 0 before losing to La Salle. The tie snapped a two-game win and the loss an eight game undefeated streak for the Hawks.….The Drexel Dragons did not record a win, but a tie provided enough points for Drexel to clinch going to the league tournament. Earlier in the week Drexel tied Northeastern on a rainy night in Boston. Anna Salvucci and Isabel Kuzy scored goals. Kuzy got her goal in the 76th minute, but the Huskies tied it at 80:20. Later in the week they fell 2 – 0 to Monmouth. But they are still going to the postseason….The University of Pennsylvania fell at Dartmouth. The Big Green got the only goal of the game in the 30th minute. Penn had the better of the shots on goal 7 – 3, but Dartmouth got the only counter….The Temple Owls lost at Memphis getting only one shot. It was on goal by Phoebe Hollin, but was saved. Goalie Kayla Burns made 9 saves, her second most in a game this year….The Villanova Wildcats dropped a pair of 1 – 0 Big East games to Georgetown and Marquette. Both opponents scored early in the games. Nova goalie Megan was a wall in the second half of each game stopping all 14 shots on goal in the second half, and one in the first 45 minutes. The Wildcats have lost 5 of their last 6 games all in the Big East.

Saint Joseph’s will be at home facing George Washington University. Villanova hosts UConn. The rest of the teams go on the road. Drexel drives to Newark to play Delaware. La Salle is also on I-95 South for a match at George Mason University. Penn goes northbound on 95 for a game against Yale. Temple has the long trip as they head to USF in an American contest.

Games of October 10 – October 16, 2022

DREXEL 9 – 2 – 5 Overall, 4 – 2 – 2 CAA

Results – Tied 2 – 2 at Northeastern, Lost 2 – 0 at Monmouth

Summary – The draw at Northeastern was the second in a row for Drexel. Goalie Molly Piso made a career-high 7 saves in that game, and Delaney Lappin assisted twice. There were only 2 shots on goal for Drexel in the loss to Monmouth.

Next Game – October 23 at Delaware

LA SALLE 8 – 7 – 1 Overall, 3 – 5 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 0 at Richmond, Won 1 – 0 vs. Saint Joseph’s

Summary – La Salle gave up two goals to Richmond within 46 seconds in the 79th and 80th minute in the loss.  The Explorers had more shots 13 – 10, but less on goal 5 – 4.

Next Game – October 20 at George Mason University

PENN  3 – 3 – 7 Overall, 0 – 2 – 2 Ivy League

Results– Lost 1 – 0 at Dartmouth

Summary – The Quakers outshot the Big green 13 – 9. Janae Stewart recorded 4 shots, 2 on goal for the Red and Blue. Alzena Seales got the Dartmouth goal.

Next Game – October 22 at Yale

SAINT JOSEPH’S  3 – 6 – 7 Overall, 2 – 1 – 5 Atlantic 10

Results – Tied 0 – 0 at George Mason University, Lost 1 – 0 at La Salle

Summary – Goalie Katie Cappelletti recorded her 6th shutout of the season at 14th in her career in Fairfax. SJU had one shot on goal. Saint Joseph’s has recorded 7 ties this season. The last conference home game in the 2022 regular season takes place on Thursday with George Washington University coming to town.

Next Game – October 20 vs. George Washington at Sweeney Field

TEMPLE 1 – 8 – 4 Overall, 0 – 5 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 2 – 0 at Memphis

Summary – The Owls seek their first conference win. Memphis put up 20 shots, 11 on goal. Burns turned away 9. She had 12 saves earlier this season against Rutgers.

Next Game – October 20 at USF

VILLANOVA 3 – 8 – 2 Overall, 2 – 5 – 0

Results – Lost 1 – 0 vs. Georgetown, Lost 1 – 0 at Marquette

Summary – Villanova battled despite having one shot on goal against Marquette and four in the Georgetown game. Megan Donnelly led the Wildcats offense at home getting 2 shots and one requiring a save. Over the week Nova was outshot 37 – 12 and were at a disadvantage of 17 – 5 in shots on goal.

Next Game – October 20 vs. UConn at the Higgins Soccer Complex
