Philly Women’s College Soccer Week in Review – October 14th Edition

As the season begins to wind down, the games become more and more important for each team.

It was a big week for the Villanova Wildcats who won two Big East games scoring multiple goals in each contest.  The Cats won at Seton Hall 5 – 1 with their biggest offensive output of the season, then returned home to get their first win over DePaul since 2011 by a 3 – 1 margin.  Chloe O’Neill found the back of the net in each game, giving her 3 for the season.  Villanova stands tied for second place in conference.

Saint Joseph’s won their only contest of the week 1 – 0 over Duquesne in the second overtime.  Erica Behr headed in a corner kick by Gabrielle Vagnozzi in the 107th minute.

Drexel and Temple each posted a win and a tie over the week.  The Dragons were involved in two 2 – 0 games, one win and one loss.  Drexel won their initial CAA game of the season over Towson behind goals by Melissa Lyon and Ali Shick.  In North Carolina the Seawolves scored in the first five minutes.  Temple was involved in two shutout games.  The Owls were on the wrong side of a 1 – 0 loss vs. SMU, but came back to win 2 – 0 over Houston.  SMU won the game with a penalty kick in the 77th minute.  Hailey Gutkowski had both goals in the win over Houston in the 71st and 78th minute.  She leads the team with 10 points.

La Salle and the University of Pennsylvania had one game on the schedule, but both teams were defeated.  The Explorers lost 4 – 1 to the Atlantic 10 leading Saint Louis Billikens.  Penn lost 1 -nil at Columbia.   The game was decided on a header by the Lions Gracie Wall off a free kick in the 78th minute.  It was the second Ancient Eight loss for the Quakers.

All of the teams continue conference play.  Drexel hosts William & Mary.  Penn hosts Dartmouth.  The remaining teams go on the road.  Headed to the Washington Metro area, La Salle is at George Mason and Saint Joe’s goes to George Washington University.  Temple heads to Florida to play UCF in Orlando.  Villanova takes on Marquette in Wisconsin.

Week of October 8 – 14, 2019

DREXEL 5 – 7 – 3 Overall, 1 – 4 – 1 CAA

Results – Won 2 – 0 vs. Towson, Lost 2 – 0 at UNCW

Summary – Goal Keeper Libby Baez had her 10th career shutout.  Baez made 5 saves at UNCW to give her 42 for the season, and 121 total career saves.  Shick scored her first collegiate goal. 

Next Game – 10/19 at William & Mary

LA SALLE 7 – 6 – 1 Overall, 3 – 3 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 4 – 1 at Saint Louis

Summary – Saint Louis outshot La Salle by a 24 – 3 margin, 16 – 4 on goal.  Explorers goal keeper Claudia Jenkins saved 10 Billikens shots.

Next Game – 10/17 at George Mason

PENN – 6 – 4 – 1 Overall, 1 – 2 – 0 Ivy League

Results– Lost 1 – 0 at Columbia

Summary – Columbia had 8 shots on goal.  Penn goal keeper Kitty Qu saved 7 of them, the second most this season for her.

Next Game – 10/19 vs. Dartmouth

SAINT JOSEPH’S  6 – 7 – 1 Overall, 3 – 3 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 1 – 0 (2 OT) vs. Duquesne

Summary – Goal Keeper Cameron Perrott made 5 saves in posting her 4th clean slate of the season.

Next Game – 10/17 at George Washington

TEMPLE 4 – 8 – 3 Overall, 2 – 4 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 1 – 0 vs. SMU, Won 2 – 0 vs. Houston

Summary – The Mustangs outshot the Owls 22 – 7, but the score was a lot closer.  Goal Keeper Morgan Basileo had 4 saves giving her 101 career saves.

Next Game – 10/17 at UCF

VILLANOVA 7 – 4 – 3 Overall, 3 – 1 – 1

Results – Won 5 – 1 at Seton Hall, Won 3 – 1 vs. DePaul

Summary – The Wildcats posted 8 goals over the two games in addition to O’Neill scores were posted by Shaye Seyffart, Sam Rosette, Shannon Casey, Makayla Stadler, and Kristin Barbour. 

Next Game – 10/20 at Marquette
