Philly Men’s Soccer D1 Recap – Week of October 3rd – 9th

Penn Winning Streak Reaches Six Games, Longest Since 2010, Drexel and Villanova Get a Victory, A-10 Draws for Saint Joseph’s and La Salle

The University of Pennsylvania defeated the Big Green of Dartmouth to remain unbeaten in the Ivy League. Ben Stitz and Michael Hewes scored in the 2 – 0 victory. Each player has six goals this season….The Drexel Dragons had a game postponed at Lehigh due to rain and field conditions. Later DU got their 40th victory in the series against UD winning 3 – 1. Daniel Nessler scored on a penalty kick at 42:55 to take the lead, then Michael McCarthy sealed it with a goal 10 minutes later….The Villanova Wildcats split their two-game Big East homestand getting a 1 – 0 win over Marquette on a corner kick goal by Viktor Benediktsson. It was his 4th goal coming in the 60th minute. The Wildcats dropped the next game 2 – 1 to Xavier, who is unbeaten in their last 12 games. The golden goal was scored in the 89th minute. Lyam MacKinnon scored the Nova goal….The La Salle Explorers tied twice in the Atlantic 10. They played to a scoreless draw at George Mason, then tied the Rhode Island Rams at 2-goals apiece. Nigel Buckley scored all the La Salle goals with the game-tying goal coming at 84:43. Buckley has a team-high 5 goals….The Saint Joseph’s Hawks ties were both scoreless in road games at Duquesne and Massachusetts. The games were the first conference shutouts for SJU. The Hawks have played to a draw 6 times this season, the most since 2013….The Temple Owls had a tough week losing both games without scoring a goal; 3 – 0 vs. FIU and 1- 0  to Memphis both at home. The Owls are looking for their initial American win.

The upcoming week sees the Dragons and the Explorers at home. Drexel plays a CAA game against Monmouth. La Salle steps out of conference hosting Lafayette. Three other Philly schools play conference road games. Penn goes to Cornell. Villanova is at Butler. Saint Joseph’s takes a trip to Long Island to meet Hofstra. Temple attempts to win in Florida at FAU in a non-league match.

Games of October 3 – October 9, 2022

DREXEL 5 – 3 – 3 Overall, 3 – 2 – 1 CAA

Results – Postponed at Lehigh, Won 3 – 1 at Delaware

Summary – Kyle Tucker had a goal and an assist giving him 9 points for the season. The Dragons are in 4th place in the CAA going into the second half of the season.

Next Game – October 15 vs. Monmouth

LA SALLE 3 – 5 – 4 Overall, 2 – 1 – 2 Atlantic 10

Results – Tied 0 – 0 at George Mason, Tied 2 – 2 vs. Rhode Island

Summary – The Explorers unbeaten streak reaches 4-games. Over the week La Salle took 22 shots, 10 on goal. They surrendered 17 shots, 11 that required a save.

Next Game – October 11 at Lafayette

PENN – 7 – 1 – 1 Overall, 2 – 0 – 0 Ivy League       

Results– Won 2 – 0 vs. Dartmouth

Summary – Penn limited Dartmouth to 2 shots on goal. Goalie Nick Christoffersen registered the shutout.

Next Game – October 15 at Cornell

SAINT JOSEPH’S  2 – 4 – 6 Overall, 1 – 1 – 3 Atlantic 10

Results – Tied 0 – 0 at Duquesne, Tied 0 – 0 at UMass

Summary – Hawks goalie Luis Ludosan made 12 saves over the week. He has 3 shutouts. Saint Joe’s was outshot 28 – 25, and gave up 12 shots on goal compared to 8 for SJU.

Next Game – October 11 at Hofstra

TEMPLE 2 – 7 – 2 Overall, 0 – 5 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 3 – 0 vs. FIU, Lost 1 – 0 vs. Memphis

Summary – The Cherry and White are 0 – 3 against Florida schools this season. Eoin Gawronski made 5 saves in the FIU game, the first meeting between the schools. Memphis scored the game winner in the 37th minute. Yann Kouemi led Temple with 3 shots, 2 on goal.

Next Game – October 15 at FAU

VILLANOVA 5 – 4 – 2 Overall, 2 – 2 – 1 Big East

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. Marquette, Lost 2 – 1 vs. Xavier

Summary – Nova is unbeaten in 5 of their last 7 games. Goalie Kent Dickey made 7 saves against the Musketeers, who scored twice in the last 30 minutes of play. The opposition outshot Nova 38 – 25, and 16 – 9 in shots on goal. s

Next Game – October 15 at Butler
