Philly Men’s Soccer D1 Recap – Week of September 12 – 18

Big Week for Penn, Villanova Ties Big East Preseason Favorite

It was a winning week for the University of Pennsylvania. The Quakers won both matches against Mount Saint Mary’s and Farleigh Dickinson by a combined score of 11 – 1. Ben Stitz, Michael Hewes, and Stas Korzeniowski found the back of the net in both games. Penn improves to 4 – 1 – 1 for the season….The Villanova Wildcats posted a win over NJIT, then tied Big East preseason favorite Providence at home. Balthi Sanders netted two goals against the Highlanders at 15:46 and 17:18. Viktor Benediktsson gave the Wildcats a lead over the Friars 40 seconds before halftime. The visitors tied the game in the 75th minute….The Temple Owls defeated Saint Peter’s at the Sports Complex behind two goals by Sawyer Koza at 9:59 and 59:36. Koza registered 3 shots, all on goal. The Owls headed to Florida for their American opener, but fell 4 – 0 to UCF….The Saint Joseph’s Hawks tied twice over the week. In a city game neither Drexel or Saint Joe’s found the back of the net in a scoreless draw. SJU went to Dayton for the A10 opener and came home with a hard fought 1 – 1 tie. Garrett Lyons got his first goal of the season in the 54th minute. Goalie Luis Ludosan made a career-high tying 9 saves. The Hawks have played tie games in 4 of their last 5….The Drexel Dragons went on the road after the Saint Joseph’s game. They fell 2 – 0 at UNCW who scored both goals in the second half….It was a tough week for the La Salle Explorers who lost 5 – 0 at Virginia, then were beaten 3 – 1 by Saint Louis in an Atlantic 10 curtain raiser. Goalie Valentin Kneis made 9 saves at Virginia, but 5 different Cavaliers got the ball past the keeper.

The upcoming week sees Drexel hosting Columbia and Saint Joseph’s meeting visiting UMBC. La Salle has a road game at Monmouth. Penn heads to Chicago for a game with DePaul. Temple has another game in Florida meeting USF. Villanova heads to New York for a contest with St. John’s.

Games of September 12 – 18, 2022

DREXEL 2 – 2 – 3 Overall, 1 – 1 – 1 CAA

Results – Tied 0 – 0 vs. Saint Joseph’s, Lost 2 – 0 at UNCW

Summary – Goalie Alessandro Copanga made 4 saves against the Hawks. Drexel had the better number of shots and forced saves, but could not get the ball over the goal line in Carolina. The edge in shots was 13 – 8, 7 – 3 on goal.

Next Game – September 20 vs. Columbia at Vidas Field

LA SALLE 1 – 4 – 2 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 5 – 0 at Virginia, Lost 3 – 1 vs. Saint Louis

Summary – Luis Puchol netted a shot at 74:20 against Saint Louis. La Salle was outscored 8 – 1 over the week.

Next Game – September 20 at Monmouth

PENN – 4 – 1 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League       

Results– Won 5 – 0 at Mount Saint Mary’s, Won 6 – 1 at Farleigh Dickinson

Summary – The Red and Blue also saw a goal by Leo Burney in the win over The Mount. All five scores came in the second half. UP outshot FDU 24 – 9, 13 – 5 on goal. Korzemiowski has 4 goals this season.

Next Game – September 25 at DePaul

SAINT JOSEPH’S  0 – 2 – 4 Overall, 0 – 0 – 1 Atlantic 10

Results – Tied 0 – 0 at Drexel, Tied 1 – 1 at Dayton

Summary – The Hawks gave up no shots to the Dragons in the second half in getting their first shutout. Dayton had the shooting advantage in Ohio 21 – 4, 10 – 2 on goal. But on the scoreboard both teams had a one for the total.

Next Game – September 20 vs. UMBC at Sweeney Field

TEMPLE 2 – 3 – 2 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 AAC

Results – Won 3 – 1 vs. Saint Peter’s, Lost 4 – 0 at UCF

Summary – The Owls posted their first win since August 25. Sean Karani scored the other Temple goal. TU had a 12 – 5 edge in shots over Saint Peter’s. But in Florida the Knights led in shots 11 – 2. Goalie Micah Ramirez made 7 saves.

Next Game – September 24 at USF

VILLANOVA 2 – 2 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 1 Big East

Results – Won 3 – 0 vs. NJIT, Tied 1 – 1 vs. Providence

Summary – Viktor Benediktsson recorded two goals over the week. Goalie Kent Dickey recorded his second shutout saving 7 NJIT attempts on goal.

Next Game – September 23 at St. John’s
