Temple Wins Twice, Penn Wins in the Ivy League

The Temple Owls won their two scheduled games both by a 2 – 1 score. Temple beat LIU on the island, then scored an American win over Houston. Hailey Gutkowski scored in the LIU game and had both against Houston. Sumaya Togba got her first collegiate goal in the 83rd minute on Long Island. The University of Pennsylvania Quakers won its only game of the week, a 3 – 1 home victory over Dartmouth. The Big Green scored in the 10th minute. Penn scored the next three. The game winner came from Janae Stewart, who also had an assist, in the 70th minute. The La Salle Explorers split their A 10 week winning 2 – 1 at Duquesne. The Explorers returned home to face league leading VCU. La Salle fell 1 – 0 on a goal in the 29th minute by Samantha Jerabek. The loss ended a two-game Explorers winning streak. The Drexel Dragons played two CAA games at home, and both went to overtime. Drexel lost 3 – 2 to UNCW, then tied Delaware 1 – 1. UNCW got the game winner in the 99th minute. Annalena O’Reilly scored in the 89th minute to even the score with Delaware. The Saint Joseph’s Hawks played two conference games and dropped both by 2 – 0 scores. The games were at home against Saint Louis and at George Washington. Goal Keeper Katie Cappellitti made 18 saves, 11 vs. the Billikens tied a season-high. Saint Louis had a 13 – 2 edge in shots on goal. It was a tough week for the Villanova Wildcats who were shutout twice over the two-game road trip. Nova lost 5 – 0 at Georgetown, then fell 1 – 0 in double overtime at Connecticut. Freshman goal keeper Ela Kopec made a career-high 13 saves against the Huskies. Jada Konte got the game-winner in the 106th minute.

Saint Joseph’s and La Salle will meet in a Philly and Atlantic 10 game on Hawk Hill. Drexel hosts Hofstra in the CAA. Villanova is also home to play Butler. Penn goes on the road to Columbia. Temple also travels, meets SMU in Texas.

Games of October 11 – October 17, 2021

DREXEL 5 – 5 – 3 Overall, 1 – 2 – 2 CAA

Results – Lost 3 – 2 (OT) vs. UNCW, Tied 1 – 1 (2 OT) vs. Delaware

Summary – Drexel had a 2 – 0 lead before surrendering 3 goals to UNCW. Lauren Currey and Delaney Lappin got the goals. Lappin assisted on the Currey goal and has 4 goals on the season. Over the two games the Dragons had 41 shots, 21 on goal, while giving up 18 shots, 14 on goal.

Next Game – October 21 vs. Hofstra at Vidas Field

LA SALLE 5 – 8 – 2 Overall, 3 – 4 – 1 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 2 – 1 at Duquesne, Lost 1 – 0 vs. VCU

Summary – In Pittsburgh the Explorers scored multiple goals in a game for the first time since the end of August against Colgate. Lauren Costello and Kelli McGroarty got the goals. La Salle had 3 shots on goal against VCU.

Next Game – October 21 at Saint Joseph’s

PENN – 7 – 3 – 2 Overall, 2 – 2 – 0 Ivy League

Results– Lost 2 – 0 at Columbia

Summary – Lucy Kellogg and Isobel Glass had the other two Penn goals. Goal Keeper Laurence Gladu made 5 saves. It was a come form behind win as Dartmouth opened the scoring in the 10th minute.

Next Game – October 18 vs. Delaware State at Rhodes Field

SAINT JOSEPH’S  3 – 11 – 2 Overall, 3 – 5 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 0 vs. Saint Louis, Lost 2 – 1 at George Washington

Summary – Saint Louis scored their two goals in the first half. At Foggy Bottom the Hawks were outshot 17 – 12, 9 – 5 on goal. Morgan Bower led the Hawks with 3 shots, 2 that required a save.

Next Game – October 21 vs. La Salle at Sweeney Field

TEMPLE 5 – 5 – 3 Overall, 2 – 3 – 0 AAC

Results – Won 2 – 1 at LIU, Won 2 – 1 vs. Houston

Summary – The first goal at LIU came from Gutkowski in the 75th minute. Leading scorer Emily Kavanaugh assisted on the Togba goal. At home goalie Kamryn Stabelin made 10 saves, 2 shy of her career-high as the Owls were outshot on goal 12 – 4 by the Cougars.

Next Game – October 20 at SMU

VILLANOVA 7 – 9 – 0 Overall, 1 – 7 – 0

Results – Lost 5 – 0 at Georgetown, Lost 1 – 0 (2 OT) at Connecticut

Summary – Over the week the Wildcats were outshot 47 – 27, 17 – 11 on goal. At Georgetown the shots came from Niki Molina and Francesca Yanchuk.

Next Game – October 24 vs. Butler at the Higgins Soccer Complex
