Philly Women’s College Soccer Week in Review – September 30th Edition

League play reigned supreme in the weekly women’s college soccer slate.  The La Salle Explorers had the best record over the span winning both games.  The Villanova Wildcats followed close behind taking their Big East encounter.  Saint Joseph’s and Temple managed in split in their games.  The University of Pennsylvania dropped their Ivy opener while Drexel fell in both CAA games.

La Salle had to play extra time in both games, but found the golden goal in their wins at Richmond and at home versus the Duquesne Dukes.  Maci Bower got the overtime winner over the Spiders.  She now has 5 goals and 11 points.  On Family Day the Explorers erased a 2 – 0 halftime deficit in defeating the Dukes.  Amirah Louketis won it in the 102nd minute.  She had a goal and an assist in the game giving 11 points this season tying Bower for the team lead.  Villanova is 1 – 0 in the Big East opening the slate with a 1 – 0 home win over Xavier.  Brice McInroy scored her 5th goal of the season in the 57th minute.

Saint Joseph’s earned a split.  The Hawks broke a four-game losing streak with a 1 – 0 win at Saint Bonaventure on a Kylie D’Ambra goal in the 74th minute.  But they could not sustain the momentum dropping a 4 – 3 decision to UMass.  Saint Joe’s had a 3 – 1 lead, but Massachusetts got three unanswered goals to secure the win.  Temple got their first win in the American with a 1 – 0 overtime win at ECU.  Gabriella Johnson scored in the golden goal in the 96th minute assisted by Julia Dolan.  Earlier in the week the Owls dropped a 2 – 0 decision at home to the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Penn lost its Ivy opener by a 1 – 0 margin at Harvard.  Gabby DelPico got the winning goal in the 72nd minute.  Last season the Quakers lost the opener but did earn a share of the Ivy Crown.  They face the same task this year.  33rd Street Neighbor Drexel lost by one goal scored late in both games.  On the road against the defending CAA Champion Hofstra Pride, it took overtime for Hofstra to take a 2 – 1 decision.  The winner came in the 92nd minute.  The College of Charleston visited and went home with a 1 – 0 win on a goal in the 81st minute.

Next up La Salle hosts VCU and Villanova entertains Georgetown.  Penn has Cornell in its Ivy home opener.  The remaining teams are on the road.  Drexel goes to Delaware, Saint Joseph’s is at Saint Louis, and Temple is in Oklahoma to play Tulsa.
