Philly Men’s College Soccer Week in Review – September 30th Edition

The non-conference schedule is winding down as the teams get in serious preparation for league play.  The La Salle Explorers had the top week of the Soccer Six schools winning both games on their schedule.  Saint Joseph’s and Villanova split, but the other schools did not find the win column.

La Salle won two games, one against Howard, then met Duquesne as part of the family weekend.  The Explorers shut out Howard, then won a 2 – 1 overtime thriller over the Dukes when Omar Cotterell got the game winner in the 97th minute.  He also assisted on the goal by Nigel Buckley.  For his play Cotterelle earned the Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week award.

Saint Joseph’s and Villanova got a win and a loss in this week’s action.  The Hawks defeated Lafayette on goals by Alvin Dahn, but dropped an overtime slugfest 4 – 3 in overtime to VCU in their Atlantic 10 game.  Villanova played a pair of 1 – 0 games defeating George Washington, but lost a Big East game at Creighton.  The Wildcats have yet to allow a goal at the Higgins Soccer Complex and shutout the opposition in 6 of the last 8 games.

Temple played one game this week, an American game at #12 UCF.  The Owls were defeated in the conference curtain raiser.  The Cherry and White were outshot 7 – 4 in the first half, but were at a 10 – 0 disadvantage in shots in the latter 45 minutes.

It was a tough week for West Philly neighbors Drexel and the University of Pennsylvania each of whom lost twice.  Drexel was on the short end of two 3 – 1 road games at Princeton and James Madison University.  Yassine Elkahoun scored at Princeton on the 87th minute and was named the Philly Soccer Six Rookie of the Week.  Michael Campbell got the Dragons tally at the 81st minute in Virginia.  Each player posted their first collegiate goal.  Penn was the victim of a 2 – 1 loss at home to Lehigh, then were shutout 3 – 0 at West Virginia.  Three tallies by the Mountaineers were the most goals given up by the Quakers this season.

Saint Joseph’s plays at Princeton and La Salle hosts NJIT.  Temple hosts Old Dominion in out of conference games.  Meanwhile, Penn starts its Ivy League schedule hosting Cornell.  Villanova hosts Xavier.  Drexel travels to Elon in CAA action.

Week of September 24 – 30, 2019

DREXEL 3 – 5 – 1 Overall, 1 – 2 – 0 CAA

Results – Lost 3 – 1 at Princeton, Lost 3 – 1 at James Madison

Summary – Drexel found themselves behind by a 2 – 0 score at halftime in each contest

Next Game – 10/5 vs. Elon

LA SALLE 5 – 4 – 0 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 Atlantic 10 

Results – Won 1 – 0 at Howard, Won 2 – 1 (OT) vs. Duquesne

Summary – The Explorers won their first road game of the season in Washington when Andrew Wier posted his initial collegiate score.  Goalie Carlos Mora recorded his first collegiate shutout at Howard, and also got a win in the Duquesne game.  He won the Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week honor.

Next Game – 10/1 vs. NJIT

PENN – 3 – 3 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsLost 2 – 1 vs. Lehigh, Lost 3 – 0 at West Virginia

Summary – Joey Bhangdia posted his team-leading 4th goal of the season.  Goalie Dane Jacomen was credited with 9 saves over the week.  His five at West Virginia marked his collegiate-best.

Next Game – 10/5 vs. Cornell

SAINT JOSEPH’S  4 – 5 – 0 Overall, 0 – 2 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 2 – 1 vs. Lafayette, Lost 4 – 3 (OT) vs. VCU

Summary – Dahl broke a 1 – 1 tie when he scored his second of the game at the 63:21 mark.  Garrett Lyons and Ritchie Barry got the assists.  At VCU Martin Ngoh scored on a breakaway in the 96th minute.  Lyons, Leon Maric and Daryus Lake had goals for the Hawks. 

Next Game – 10/1 at Princeton

TEMPLE 2 – 5 – 0 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 2 – 0 at #12 UCF

Summary – Goalie Simon Lefebvre saved 6 shots, all in the second half in Orlando.

Next Game – 10/1 vs. Old Dominion

VILLANOVA 5 – 3 – 1 Overall, 0 – 1 – 1 Big East

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. George Washington, Lost 1 – 0 at Creighton

Summary – The Wildcats were in familiar territory, a 1 – nil game.  Evan Vare got the goal in the GW game.  Nova could not overcome an early Blue Jays netter in Omaha.

Next Game – 10/4 vs. Xavier
