October 30, 2021 –

The Saint Joseph’s Hawks qualified for the Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer tournament when they defeated the VCU Rams 1 – 0 last Sunday in Richmond. VCU earned the top-seed. On the same field the Hawks did it again by the same score and advance to the conference tournament semifinal round.

Saint Joe’s scored in the third-minute when defender Erica Behr put the ball home off a scramble in front of the net. It was her second of the season. The Hawks had a corner kick that Gabriella Senni sent the ball to the center of the box. VCU goal keeper Grace Young tried to punch it away. The ball was played three times before Behr put it home.

SJU goal keeper Katie Cappelletti made 7 saves in the game, four in the second half, while Young turned four away from the goal.

VCU had 25 shots led by Ella Higgins with five. Behr had 2 of 7 shots, both on goal, and the only goal.

The Rams won the stat war, but the Hawks got the game.

Saint Joseph’s moves on the their second semifinal appearance since 2018 and will play the winner of the Sunday #4 UMass and #5 Saint Bonaventure match. The semifinal will be played on Friday, November 5. The Hawks came in as the #8 seed and will play all remaining games on the road as the highest remaining seed will host the semifinal and final round games.

But the objective is to keep playing as this team won their first game on September 23rd at Davidson, their 10th game. Since that game Saint Joe’s is 5 – 4 and, now, look for more.
