PHILLY COLLEGE SPORTS MEN’S SOCCER WEEK IN REVIEW

                                       Villanova Wins Big East Opener, La Salle and Penn Get Initial Wins

Week of  September 11 – 18, 2017

DREXEL 1 – 4 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 1 CAA

Results – Lost 4 – 0 at #16 Washington, Lost 1 – 0 at Seattle

Summary –  The Dragons went west, but came up empty losing to nationally-ranked Washington and Seattle.  Drexel gave up three goals in the first half at Washington.  Seattle scored in the 22nd minute.  Goalie Jacob Jordan made 19 saves over the Pacific Northwest trip.  The offense did not find the back of the net.

Next Game – 9/23 vs. Penn at Vidas Field

LA SALLE 2 – 4 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won  2 – 0 vs. Saint Peter’s, Won 2 – 1 vs. Lafayette both at McCarthy Stadium

Summary – The Explorers won both contests over the week, their first two wins of the season.  Goalie Mark Tobin 10 saves over the week allowing one score to lead La Salle. Tobin was named the Soccer Six Co-Defender of the Week.  Johnny Ciarlante, Soji Olatoye, Kenny Lassiter, and Mark Robinson scored.  Robinson has a team-leading three goals this season.

Next Game – 9/20 vs. Penn at McCarthy Stadium

PENN – 1 – 4 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsLost 3 – 0 vs. Lehigh, Won 2 – 0 vs. SIU-Edwardsville both at Rhodes Field

Summary – The University bounced back from a shutout defeat against Lehigh with a season first win over SIU Edwardsville.  Goalie Etan Mabourakh earned Philadelphia Soccer Six Co-Defender of the Week honors by turning in 9 saves over a ten minute stretch in the win over SIU.  It was the first shutout for Mabourakh this season.  Penn got goals from Joe Swenson and Jake Kohlbrenner.

Next Game – 9/23 at Drexel

SAINT JOSEPH’S  2 – 2 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 1 (OT) at. Sacred Heart

Summary –  The Hawks lost in heartbreaking fashion when Sacred Heart got the tying goal in the 89th minute, then won it just 4 minute into the extra period.  Midfielder Aidan Watkins scored his first collegiate goal in the 28th minute.  Goalie Greg O’Connell matched his season-high with 7 saves for Saint Joe’s.

Next Game – 9/19 at Villanova

TEMPLE 1 – 4 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 2- 0 at Fairfield

Summary – Two second half goals by the Stags proved to be too much for the Owls to overcome.  Temple put 5 shots on goal to 6 by Fairfield.  Goalie Alex Cagle made 2 saves.

Next Game – 9/19 vs. Duquesne at the Temple Sports Complex

VILLANOVA 4 – 3 – 0 Overall, 1 – 0 – 0 Big East

Results – Won 2 – 0 at Rider, Won 3 – 1 vs. Marquette

Summary – The Wildcats won for a Soccer Six leading fourth time by sweeping both games this week.  In the Big East opener freshman midfielder Theo Quartey scored twice, the equalizer and the insurance goal in being named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Player and Rookie of the Week.  Jack Gilliam scored the winner at the 74 minute mark.  Seniors Lucas Hodges and Andreas Bartoskowski scored the goals in the shutout at Rider.  Goalie Will Steiner made 4 saves to get the clean slate.
