Villanova Claims The Soccer Six Title, La Salle Sweeps Two Games In Conference

DREXEL 1 – 11 – 2 Overall, 0 – 6 – 0 CAA
Results – Lost 2 – 0 vs. James Madison at Vidas Field
Summary – The loss eliminated the Dragons from post-season play as they fell to the James Madison Dukes. JMU outshot Drexel 16 – 5 and scored twice in the second half to secure the victory. Dragons goalie Tyler Afflerbach made six saves.

LA SALLE 8 – 7 – 0 Overall, 3 – 3 – 0 Atlantic 10
Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. Dayton at McCarthy Stadium, Won 3 – 0 at George Mason
Summary – The Explorers swept both games this week. Goalie Cameron Keys turned in back to back clean slates making 9 saves and was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week. Sixtus Akinlosotu scored at the 19:12 mark and that held up as La Salle downed Dayton. Johnny Ciarlante, Matt Robinson, and Hayden Criollo scored against George Mason. The Explorers evened their A10 record and stand tied for fifth in the standings with the Saint Joe’s Hawks.

PENN –4 – 4 – 5 Overall, 2 – 2 – 0 Ivy League
Results – Lost 4 – 0 at Villanova, Won 3 – 0 at Yale
Summary – The University of Pennsylvania were on both sides of a shutout this week. The offense was blanked for the first time since the Creighton game. In the loss to Villanova the Quakers outshot the Wildcats 16 – 7. At New Haven the offense started quickly when Dami Omitaomu scored in the 6th minute. In scoring the game winner Omitaomu was named the Soccer Six Rookie of the Week. Other Penn goals came from Gideon Metrikin and Alec Neumann.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 6 – 9 – 1 Overall, 3 – 4 – 0 Atlantic 10
Results – Lost 2 – 0 at VCU, Lost 2 – 0 vs. Duquesne
Summary – The Hawks were downed by identical 2 – 0 scores in A10 games over the week. Saint Joe’s have lost four games in a row. the opposition took a total of 25 shots. SJU goalie Greg O’Connell made 7 saves. Saint Joseph’s is tied for 5th place in the Atlantic 10 standings sharing that spot with La Salle, their next opponent.

TEMPLE 9 – 5 – 2 Overall, 1 – 2 – 2 AAC
Results – W 2 – 1 vs. Delaware, Tied 1 – 1 (2 OT) vs. Tulsa, both games at the Temple Sports Complex
Summary – The non-conference schedule concluded for the Owls with a win over the Delaware Blue Hens. Matt Mahoney scored his first goal of the season in the 78th minute to win it. Jorge Gomez-Sanchez netted his 13th goal of the season within the first ten minutes. In the Tulsa game Jordan Wix Rauch tied the game in the 87th minute. The Owls outshot the opposition 30 – 18, 16 – 6 on goal.

VILLANOVA 8 – 5 – 2 Overall, 3 – 2 – 1 Big East
Results – Won 4 – 0 vs. Penn, Won 1 – 0 vs. #10 Creighton both at the Higgins Soccer Complex
Summary – Returning home for the first time in three weeks the Wildcats won the Philadelphia Soccer Six crown defeating Penn. Lucas Hodges scored twice and goalie Will Steiner made 5 saves. Miguel Polley had 2 goals, in the 12th and 19th minute, and assisted on both Hodges goals. He followed that performance by getting the only goal of the game against Creighton. For his efforts Polley was named the Soccer Six Offensive Player of the Week.
