Drexel Gets Two Wins Over City Opponents, Temple Explodes For 8 Goals

Games The Week Of September 12- 19, 2017

DREXEL 5 – 4 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 2 – 1 vs. Penn, Won 2 – 1 vs. Villanova both at Vidas Field

Summary – The Dragons picked up a pair of 2 – 1 victories against city rivals.  Kiera Hennessy scored the go-ahead goal against Penn, and Vanessa Kara got the game-winner in the Villanova game.  Shaelyn McCarty and Madison Dunn scored as well.  Drexel had a 30  17 edge in shots over the tow games.  CAA play begins on Thursday.

Next Game – 9/21 vs. Northeastern at Vidas Field

LA SALLE 5 – 3 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 1 – 0 (OT) vs. Delaware, Lost 1 – 0 vs. #6 West Virginia at The Princeton Tournament

Summary – Participating in the Princeton Tournament the Explorers dropped two 1 – 0 decisions.  Delaware scored in the 93rd minute to get the win.  A penalty kick by West Virginia in the 20th minute was the decider.  The Mountaineers had 28 shots, 5 on goal.  LA Salle begins the Atlantic 10 part of its schedule on Thursday hosting Duquesne.

Next Game – 9/21 vs. Duquesne at McCarthy Stadium

PENN – 1 – 5 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsLost 2 – 1 at Drexel, Lost 2 – 0 at George Mason

Summary – The University of Pennsylvania gave up 2 goals in each game, but could not overcome the deficits.  Allie Trzaska tied the game against Drexel in the 82nd minute, but 4 minutes later Kiera Hennessey headed the ball into the net off a corner kick.  George Mason netted two goals in the second half.  Penn will begin play in the Ivy League this upcoming weekend.

Next Game – 9/23 at Harvard

SAINT JOSEPH’S 5 – 2 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Result – Lost 3 – 0 at Providence, Won 3 – 2 (OT) vs. Columbia at Sweeney Field

Summary –  The Hawks offense was held in check in Rhode Island getting two shots on goal.  Returning home SJU’s Gabriella Vagnozzi scored 38 seconds into the extra period for the win.  Vagnozzi delivered the winner on a shot low to the left side.  Saint Joe’s had a 2- 0 lead over Columbia on first half goals by Taylor Ryan and Morgan Bower.  However, the Lions scored twice in the second half to force overtime.  Saint Joseph’s travels to Richmond to start Atlantic 10 play.

Next Game – 9/21 at Richmond

TEMPLE 4 – 3 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 American

Results – Tied 0 – 0 (2 OT) at Towson, Won 8 – 0 vs. Delaware State at the Temple Sports Complex

Summary – The Owls had 15 shots, 7 on goal, and 13 corner kicks at Towson.  Everything but a goal.  The offense came to life in an 8 – 0 win over Delaware State.  Morgan Glassford scored twice.  Keri McGinley, Morgan Morocco, Fran Davis, Gabriella McKeown, Sarah McGlinn, and Elana Falcone netted goals for the Temple.  The Cherry and White had a 5 – 0 lead at halftime.  Goal keeper Morgan Basileo turned in a pair of shutout performances.  She has a .27 Goals Against Average this season.

Next Game – 9/23 at Central Connecticut State University

VILLANOVA 4 – 5 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 Big East

Results – Won 2 – 1 vs. Harvard at the Higgins Soccer Complex, Lost 2 – 1 at Drexel

Summary – Amanda Vocelka headed the game-winner in the 83rd minute against Harvard, the final non-conference home game for the Wildcats.  Emily Kuefler had the other counter, and scored the only goal on a tap in at Drexel.  Nova finished the non-conference part of the schedule with a 4 – 5 record matching the team’s total number of wins from last season.  It will be Big East games for the remainder of the season for Villanova.
