Geoff Collins and Mark Ferrante Experience Opening Games As Head Coach

Games of September 2nd 2017

TEMPLE – Overall 0 –  1, 0 – 0  American Athletic Conference

Result – Lost 49 – 16 at Notre Dame

Summary – The Temple Owls needed a strong start to defeat Notre Dame at their refurbished stadium in South Bend, Indiana.  They did not get it.  Geoff Collins in his initial game as head coach saw his Owls give up a touchdown on the second play of the game on a 37-yard run by Irish running back Josh Adams.  It was the first of two rushing scores for Adams.  Notre Dame followed with a an 8-yard run for a score by freshman quarterback Brandon Wimbush .  Wimbush threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Weishar late in the opening quarter to give the Irish a 21 – 3 lead.  The hosts scored on four of their first five drives to take a 28 – 10 lead into halftime.  Temple quarterback Logan Marchi threw a touchdown pass to tight end Keith Kirkwood in the second quarter, the first of his career.  Notre Dame closed out the game scoring the last two touchdowns of the contest.

Marchi started for the first time completing 19 of 35 attempts for 245 yards and 2 scoring tosses.  He found nine different receivers and was not intercepted.  Running back Ryquell Armstead ran for 67 yards.  The other touchdown pass went to Isaiah Wright who had 4 catches for 79 yards a career-high.   As a team the Owls had 330 yards of offense.

Defensively, the Cherry and White gave up 606 yards of offense,  422 yards on the ground.  Adams had 161 of those yards.  Wimbush completed 17 of 30 for 184 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.  He also posted 106 yards on the ground.  Williams totaled 124 yards on the ground crossing the goal line once.  Delvon Randall led the Owls with 11 tackles, 6 solo.

Next Game – September 9 vs. #10 Villanova The Linc – 3:30 PM Kickoff

#10  VILLANOVA – Overall 1 – 0, 0 – 0 CAA

Result – Won 38 – 35 at #17 Lehigh

Summary –  Head Coach Mark Ferrante won his debut as the #10 Villanova Wildcats hung on for a 38 – 35 win at Lehigh.  Running back Matt Gudzak ran for a career-high 142 yards n 12 carries and 2 touchdowns to lead the Wildcats.  He had scoring carries of 14 and 33 yards.  It was the first time Nova won their season-opener since 2009 when they defeated Temple 27 – 24.

Villanova scored 3 times in the second quarter.  Gudzak crossed the goal line twice and quarterback Zach Bednarczyk took it in from 18-yards out as the Wildcats took a 28 – 14 lead into intermission.

In the third quarter Taurus Phillips hauled in a 75-yard touchdown catch, the longest of his career,  from Bednarczyk for the only Villanova points of the quarter.  Meanwhile, Lehigh posted two touchdowns to pull to within 35 – 28.  Drew Kresge provided the winning points converting a 32-yard field goal.

The Wildcats ran for 281 yards and limited the hosts to 87 yards on the ground.  Bednarczyk ran for 72 yards in addition to 209 passing yards.  Gudzak had a 56-yard run.  Ryan Bell led the team with 5 receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown.  Phillips had 97 receiving yards on 3 catches.

Ed Shockley turned in 14 tackles, 13 solo.  Malik Reeves recorded 11 tackles.  Rob Rolle had 8 stops and returned a fumble 63 yards which set up a score.

The Mountain Hawks out-gained the Wildcats 484 – 475 yards.  Lehigh had 406 yards through the air as quarterback Brad Mayes completed 33 of 49 passing attempts scoring four times.  Wide receiver Troy Pelletier caught 11 passes for 141 yards and a score.  Casey Gatlin caught two touchdown passes the last on with just under 5 minutes to play for the final margin.
