Temple Heads To Tournament Play, Penn Salvages A Tie, Drexel Ends Season With Two Wins

Week of October 23 – 30, 2013 Games

DREXEL 7 – 10 – 1 Overall, 3 – 5 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 1 – 0 at UNCW, Won 4 – 1 at College of Charleston

Drexel 1 UNCW 0 – It was the fourth shutout of the season and the 17th in the career of goal keeper Eve Badana as the Dragons notched a road win in Wilmington, NC.  Lauren Stollar scored in the 83rd minute off a corner kick from Christine Stevenson.  Badana made a save 5 minutes later to keep the lead for Drexel.

Drexel 4 College of Charleston 1 – The Dragons closed out the season with a 4 – 1 in South Carolina.  Jess Sarkisian scored the eventual game-winner early in the first half sending home a rebound off a shot by Christine Stevenson.  It was the final collegiate game for Sarkisian and Stevenson.  In the 23rd minute Stevenson scored on a rebound off a shot by fellow senior Andi Stampone.  Freshman Nicolette Wilkins scored the first goal of her career to finish the scoring.

Next Game – 2014 Season Opener

LA SALLE 11 – 4 – 2 Overall, 3 – 2 – 1 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 1 at Saint Bonaventure, Won 3 – 0 at Duquesne

Summary –

Saint Bonaventure 2 LaSalle 1 – The Explorers gave up two goals in the final eight minutes dropping a conference road match.  The game-winner came in the final two minutes of the game.  Deja Davis scored the LaSalle goal in the 83rd minute, the assist went to Kelsey Haycook.  Goal keeper Katie Getzinger made three saves.  LaSalle outshot the Bonnies 16 – 9.

LaSalle 3 Duquesne 0 – Kerri Aiken recorded two goals, the first coming in the 21st minute that gave LaSalle the lead.  It was her second game-winner of the season.  Aiken scored her other goal in the second half that was assisted by Maryam Huseini who has 11 assists this season, and placed her third on the school’s all-time list in that category.  Marykate Bateman had the other tally for the Explorers.

Next Game – 11/1 vs. Dayton at McCarthy Stadium

PENN – 10 – 1 – 4 Overall, 3 – 1 – 1 Ivy League

ResultsTied 1 – 1 vs. Yale at Rhodes Field

Summary –

Penn 1 Yale 1 – The Red and Blue were in danger of losing a league match.  Kelly Scalora would convert a penalty kick with 21 seconds to play to salvage a tie at Rhodes Field.  Penn is behind league leading Harvard who is 5 – 0 in the Ancient Eight.  Paula Hagopian scored for Yale off a corner kick in the 76th minute.

Next Game – 11/2 at Brown

SAINT JOSEPH’S 6 –7 – 3 Overall, 2 – 3 – 1 Atlantic 10

Result – Lost 3 – 2 (2 OT) at Saint Bonaventure

Summary –

Saint Bonaventure 3 Saint Joseph’s 2 (2 OT) – The Hawks kept fighting back, but the Bonnies got the last goal from Lauren Hill at 105:20 for the win.  Trailing by one in the first half, SJU tied the game on a goal by Mo Hawkins in the 66th minute.  The Bonnies took the lead again in the 69th minute to be answered by Saint Joe’s Shannon Farrell.  The tie stood until the second half.  Saint Bonaventure had a 19 – 10 edge in shots.  Hawks goal keeper Lauren Jancuska made a game-high  9 saves.

Next Game – 11/1 vs. George Mason at Sweeney Field

TEMPLE 6 – 11 – 1 Overall, 1 – 8 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 3 – 0 at Memphis, Lost 2 – 0 at Rutgers

Summary –

Memphis 3 Temple 0 – The host Tigers scored all three goals in the first half to put away the Owls.  Memphis outshot Temple 17 – 6.  Owls goal keeper Shauni Kerkhoff recorded 4 saves.

Rutgers 2 Temple 0 – The Owls will get the 9th seed in the AAC Tournament and will play #8 SMU.  But Temple goes into conference tournament play getting shutout in their last two games.  Rutgers put the  pressure on Temple out shooting the Owls 15 – 2 in the first half.  Kerkhoff recorded 4 saves.

Next Game – 11/1 vs. SMU – Temple #9 Seed AAC Tournament First Round

VILLANOVA 6 – 8 – 3 Overall, 3 – 4 – 1 Big East

Results – Lost 3 – 1 vs. #15 Georgetown at the West Campus Soccer Complex

Summary –

#15 Georgetown 3 Villanova 1 – The Hoyas scored their three goals in an 18-minute span in the first half.  That was too steep a hill to climb for the Wildcats who lost their 4th Big East match.  The first goal came less than 4 minutes into the contest.  Villanova got a goal from Katie Martin who put home a penalty kick 67th minute.  Georgetown had a 10 – 6 edge in shots and a 5 – 1 lead in corner kicks.  Goal keeper Jami Kranich recorded 2 saves for the Wildcats

Next Game – 11/2 vs. Providence at the West Campus Soccer Complex
