Villanova Upsets Nationally Ranked Creighton, Temple Wins First Ever AAC Game, Penn Stays Unbeaten In The Ivy League

DREXEL 7 – 6 – 2 Overall, 3 – 0 – 1 CAA
Results – Won 2 – 0 at UNCW
Summary –
Drexel 2 UNCW 0 – The Dragons snapped a four game winless streak defeating UNCW. Goal keeper Tyler Afflerbach notched his fifth shutout of the season making a career-best 8 saves. Drexel scored in the 34th minute when John Grosh settled a rebound and shot the ball home from the top of the box. The insurance goal came in the 50th minute off the foot of Guido Pena assisted by Ken Tribbett.
Drexel 2 Delaware 1 – The Dragons won their second straight road game getting goals from junior midfielder Michele Pataia and senior midfielder Nathan Page to win in Newark, Delaware. Pataia scored in the 19th minute to give Drexel the lead. Page provided the insurance in the 68th minute. For his effort Pataia was named the CAA Player of the Week. Freshman goal keeper Tyler Afflerbach made 4 saves, the last one coming with 54 seconds remaining. For his effort Afflerbach was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week.
#12 Maryland 1 Drexel 0 – The Dragons played the nationally ranked Terrapins even until the 77th minute when Sunny Jane snuck the ball past Afflerbach. Maryland outshot Drexel 16 – 3. Afflerbach recorded 11 saves.

LA SALLE 6 – 5 – 2 Overall, 3 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10
Results – Won 2 – 0 vs. Saint Joseph’s at McCarthy Stadium
Summary –
LaSalle 2 Saint Joseph’s 0 – Explorers Junior Forward Rob Friskey and senior midfielder Jason Plumhoff had a goal and an assist apiece. Friskey scored in the 55 minute and Plumhoff added his goal 9 minutes later. The Explorers outshot the Hawks 17 – 12 and had a 4 – 3 Corner Kick advantage. SJU senior goal keeper Andrew D’Ottavi made 6 saves, 4 in the second half as he faced 10 Explorers shots over the last 45 minutes. Plumhoff was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Co-Player of the Week.

Results – Won 3 – 0 vs. Dartmouth
Summary –
Penn 3 Dartmouth 0 – Junior midfielder Duke Lacroix scored 2 goals to keep the Red and Blue unbeaten in Ivy play. Freshman forward Alec Neumann scored the first goal of the game, assisted by Lacroix, in the first 20 minutes to give Penn the lead. Lacroix netted the 5th and 6th goals, a new career-high. Senior goal keeper Tyler Kinn recorded a shutout keeping his record clean in not allowing a goal in Ancient Eight play. Lacroix’s five-point play night earned him the Philadelphia Soccer Six Co-Player of the Week.

Result – Lost 2 – 0 at LaSalle
Summary –

Summary –
Temple 2 Memphis 1 – The Owls earned their first ever AAC win defeating Memphis at home. The match remained tight throughout. Temple broke through in the 80th minute when freshman Robert Sagel converted a penalty kick, his third goal of the season. Memphis scored 6 minutes later on a goal by Mark Sherrod. The Owls netted the game winner 2 minute later as sophomore Jared Martinelli scored. Temple was outshot 14 -13 but junior goal keeper Dan Scheck came up with 7 saves, 4 in the second half.

VILLANOVA 7 – 6 – 1 Overall, 2 – 3 – 0 Big East
Results – Won 1 – 0 at #12 Creighton (OT)
Summary –
Villanova 1 #12 Creighton 0 – The Wildcats won their third straight game upending nationally ranked Creighton in overtime. Senior forward Dylan Renna scored unassisted with 32 seconds remaining in the first extra period. The loss was the first at home for the Creighton Blue Jays. The Wildcats were outshot 20 – 13, 18 – 8 in regulation, but junior goal keeper Andrew Weakly made four saves to get the shutout. In doing so Weakly was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Defender of the Week.
