Mike Kern’s Fraud Five
November 10, 2024
And yes, the regular season is nearing an end. Where did the time go?
Miami — The Hurricanes have been living on the edge a lot, so maybe we should have seen this one coming. They lost at Georgia Tech, 28-23. They were favored by double digits. So much for another unbeaten. They have Wake Forest and Syracuse left, so they could still get into the ACC title game and the 12-team expanded playoff. We shall see.
Georgia — Not because the Dawgs lost at Ole Miss, where they were only a slight fave. Even if they haven’t lost to anyone not named Alabama in like the last three or four years. It’s the way it happened. They scored 10 points, just three in the final 55 minutes. OK, it was in the rain. For both teams I presume. It will be interesting to see where they end up in the CFP rankings this week. I assume they could (or even would) still make the playoffs with two losses. But they host Tennessee next, and finish with Georgia Tech. So we’ll see.
LSU — Brian Kelly said he went to Baton Rouge to have a better chance to win a national title, something the three previous coaches there had all done. This is his third season. His Tigers won’t be making the playoffs, following a 42-13 home loss to Alabama. Nothing wrong with falling to the Tide, which was a slight fave. But not like this. And LSU scored a touchdown with 11 seconds to go. Bet that won him some whatever with the crowd. Or the ones who were still there. The fact that he’s not a very huggable guy doesn’t help. But he is making like a zillion dollars.
Iowa State — Was ranked 17th. Lost at Kansas, where they were only a slight fave, 45-36. Kansas is 3-6. Which makes me wonder why Cyclones were just a slight fave. It was 38-13 midway through the third quarter.
Minnesota — Gophers had won four straight. Rutgers had lost four straight. The final was 26-19, in Jersey. Good thing the visitors kicked a field goal with a minute left. The Rutgers quarterback was a Gopher transfer. Go figure.
Dishonorable Mention
Florida State — It’s almost force of habit by now. Lost 52-3 at Notre Dame. The Seminoles could finish with their lowest win total in a full season since going 3-8 in 1975. So how you go from 13-0 to this, in 11 months?
