Villanova and Penn Win on the Road, Temple on a Bye Week

Villanova 20 Hampton 14

The Wildcats defense came up big on both sides of the ball. Linebacker Brandon Bell made 7 tackles and a sack, yet he contributed to the offense by running for a 4-yard touchdown with 3:58 remaining in the 3rd quarter that provided the winning points. It was his first career touchdown and the first snaps on that side of the ball.

The defense preserved the victory in the fourth quarter. Trailing by six Hampton drive to the Villanova 45-yard line. On the fourth-and-one play Nova defensive back Jalen Goodman broke up a pass by Pirates quarterback Chris Zellous with 3:53 showing on the clock. After taking over on downs, Villanova ran the clock.

Wildcat wide out Jaylen Sanchez caught 5 passes for 103 yards. His longest catch and run was a 72-yard play. Connor Watkins completed 9 of 22 passes for 149 yards. Running back David Avit ran for 76 yards and one touchdown.

Linebacker Shane Hartzell led the team with 9 tackles.

An even statistic was total offense where Villanova had 241 yards while Hampton totaled 239. Each team moved the sticks 12 times. The Pirates had the advantage on the ground gaining 155 yards to 92 for the Wildcats. Running back Ja’Quan Snipes netted 85 rushing yards for Hampton.

Villanova improves to 7 – 2 and 4 – 1 in the Coastal Athletic Association. The next game will be next Saturday when they host North Carolina A&T.

Penn 38 Brown 28

The University of Pennsylvania won their first Ivy League game of the season defeating the Brown Bears in Providence.

Penn quarterback Liam O’Brien made his first career start in the place of the injured Aidan Sayin. Conventional wisdom would say the Red and Blue would be more run centric on offense, and did run for 172 yards. But through the air O’Brien passed for 247 yards (18 for 24) and 2 touchdowns. He added 60 rushing yards. Wide receiver Jared Richardson caught 7 passes for 113 yards. Tight end Bisi Owens hauled in 6 passes for 89 yards. On the ground running back Malachi Hosely posted over 100-yards for the fourth time this season and he scored twice.

The Red and Blue went out to a 28 – 7 lead early in the third quarter, and increased the advantage to 38 – 7 when Justin Cayenne hauled in a 15-yard scoring strike with 10:49 to play.

Brown would mount a comeback scoring the next 14 points on 2 touchdowns and a safety. The Bears were not successful on tow-point conversion tries.

Penn gained 172 yards rushing while Brown gained 146. Bears quarterback Jake Wilcox passed for 260 yards. On defense John Lista made 12 tackles, 11 solo, and a sack while Jack Fairman was involved in 9 stops for the Red and Blue. Four times Brown lost yardage on an offensive play,

The Quakers are 3 – 4 overall and 1 – 3 in the Ancient Eight, and travel to Cornell. The Red and Blue and Big Red meet for 130th time, the 5th most played rivalry in Division I. At one time the teams met on Thanksgiving Day. Many years ago. Now, the game is played on an earlier date.
