Villanova and Lehigh Play to a Draw

Late Goal By Lehigh Ties the Game at 1

VILLANOVA, PA. 8/20/2023 –

The Villanova Wildcats looked to earn a sweep in their opening week for the women’s soccer season. The Wildcats held a lead and shot advantage, but gave up a goal in the 81st minute resulting in a 1 – 1 tie against Lehigh at the Higgins Soccer Complex.

Nova opened the scoring late in the first half. Freshman forward Alex Little scored her first career goal at the 39:26 mark. The assist went to Myla McLeod. Little took a pass from McLeod at the top of the 18-yard box, got by a defender, then let a left footer go that found the back of the net. It was also the first collegiate assist for the junior transfer from Vanderbilt.

“Myla played a fantastic ball to Alex,” said Villanova Coach Samar Azem. “Alex showed what Alex does best.”

The momentum was on the side of the Wildcats, but they could not get an insurance goal. The last 15 minutes belonged to the Mountain Hawks. In the 81st minute off a corner kick. Emma Roesing sent the ball into the box. Ryelle Shuey headed the ball over the goal keeper and over the goal line.

The Wildcats held a 19 – 13 advantage in shots, 14 – 7 in the second half. Villanova goalie Payton Woodward made 4 saves.

Little let 4 shots go for the Cats. Graduate forward Jackie Richards had 8 shots, 2 that required a save. Forward Aminah Baruwa led the Mountain Hawks with 4 shots.

Villanova starts the season at 1 – 0 – 1. The first road game will be next Sunday at Temple. It begins a five-game rod swing for the Wildcats.
