The Hawks Go On The Road and Downs VCU 3 – 0
September 24, 2021 –
The 8th ranked Hawks of Saint Joseph’s opened the league schedule going to Richmond to face the Rams of VCU. The last time the Hawks played the Rams on this field was the Atlantic 10 Championship game on April 24, 2021. VCU won that game and ended the streak of A10 titles for Saint Joe’s.
In the new season the Hawks claim a measure of revenge for that loss with a 3 – 1 win on Cary Street Field. In a big third quarter the Hawks got three goals to take a commanding lead. SJU is riding a five-game winning streak.
Three different Hawks players scored in the game. Forward Anna Miller led the team with a goal and an assist. Forward Manu Ghigliotti started the scoring just after halftime tapping in a pass from Miller at the 33:44 mark. In just a minute and fourteen seconds later midfielder Sol Borensztein found the left corner of the net to give SJU a 2 – 0 lead. With 11 seconds left Miller scored off a VCU turnover.
The Rams (4 – 3, 1 – 1) got their only goal late in the fourth quarter when Maite Strum scored off a rebound.
The game was close statistically. SJU outshot VCU by an 8 – 6 margin. The Hawks had a 5 – 4 advantage in penalty corners. Saint Joe’s goal keeper Robin Bleekemolen made 2 saves. The goal by Strum ended a 182:30 shutout streak for Bleekemolen.
Saint Joseph’s (7 – 2, 1 – 0) stays in Richmond for a Sunday game with the Spiders.
