Temple Finishes Third in AAC Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Owls Score 81 Points, Highest Total in Conference Meet

The Temple Owls women’s track and field team finished in third place in the American Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the highest finish for the program. Temple amassed 81 points. The Houston Cougars won the women’s and men’s title. In the women’s standings Houston had 153 points. Cincinnati was second with 106.33.

Michelle Joyce led the Cherry and White scoring 18 total points winning the 5000m run and getting a second place finish in the 10,000m. Distance runner Grace Moore posted 14 points getting silvers in the 1500m and the 5000m. Emma Gee was second in the 3000m Steeplechase and ran fourth in the 5000m and earned 13 team points.

The event where Temple was most productive was the 5000m. Joyce won it with a time of 16:38.41. She was the sole overall champion for the Cherry and White. Moore ran a time of 16:43.98, and Gee covered the distance in 16:48.20. Overall, the Owls recorded 21 points in the event.

Joyce got the Cherry and White started setting the school record and her personal best by 22 seconds in the 10,000m on Friday where she finished in second place. Her record setting time was 34:47.69. On Saturday Gee was second in the 3000m Steeplechase running a time of 10:14.93.

On Sunday the Owls made their move.

In the High Jump Aisha Brown placed 4th with a jump of 1.73m. Nicole Castor was 5th clearing a personal-best 1.7m. Temple took home 9 points in the field event, their only points in the field.

Running a team best time of the season of 46.35 the 4×100 Relay team finished 5th and gained 4 more points. Chelby Elam, Chidumga Nkulume, Jewel Ofotan, and Mallorie Smith formed the team.

Temple scored 11 big points in the 1500m run. Moore ran the program best time in the event at the AAC Outdoor Championships of 4:20.68 finishing second and earning 8 points. Helene Holm Gottlieb placed 6th in the event and brought home 3 more points for the Cherry and White.

Marissa White was 7th in the 400m running a personal best 54.40 and added 2 points to the team total.

Another point haul for the Owls came in the 800m run. Lea Kerbiriou got a silver covering the distance in 2:09.02. Alanna Lally got a bronze finishing just .06 seconds behind. Holm Gottlieb was in 7th place turning in a time of 2:12.34. Overall, the Cherry and White scored 16 points in the event.

Going into the final event, the 4×400 Relay, Temple and Wichita State stood tied for third with 79 points each. Both squads had a team in the event. It would be the third place deciding race. The Owls finished 7th and got the 2 points needed to get third place in the overall standings. The Shockers were 9th in the event and settled for fourth in the team standings. The relay team of Mary Olayinka Ilelaboye, Nkulume, Kerbiriou, and White posted a time of 3:43.56.

The NCAA East Regional is scheduled for May 27 – 29 for the Owls who qualify.
