The Saint Joseph’s Hawks ended the regular season road schedule dropping a 64 – 49 decision to the VCU Rams who were celebrating their Senior Day. Katie Mayock and Kaliah Henderson led the Hawks in scoring getting 12 points each.
The game started as a tightly contested one where points were going to be at a premium. Neither team shot the ball well through three quarters, and Saint Joe’s suffered two single digit scoring periods. The Hawks had more shots, but did not capitalize making 20 of 54 and sank 4 three-pointers. The Rams were not much better from the field, but they did create turnovers getting a 16 – 4 edge in points off turnovers. VCU stole the ball 9 times causing 16 Saint Joseph’s miscues. The hosts lead the Atlantic 10 in turnover margin.
Still, neither team could pull away. Saint Joe’s had a 26 – 24 lead at halftime. The Rams started the third quarter with a 12 – 4 run to take control. A three-pointer by Tara Reed game the Rams a 41 – 32 lead going into the final ten minutes and control of the game.
The ball went into the basket a bit more for each team in the final ten minutes. VCU put the game away at the foul line making 13 of their last 14 from the charity stripe. Overall, the Rams made 26 of 35 free throws.
VCU had three players score in double-figures headed by Taya Robinson with 16 points. Tera Reed added 14 while Chloe Bloom added 12 points.
Mayock led SJU with 8 rebounds. Bottom line was the Hawks did not have enough offense as this game was the third lowest scoring output for the Hawks. Saint Joseph’s (5 – 9, 3 – 9) will end the regular season next weekend hosting St. Bonaventure and Duquesne.
