Big Five 2019-20 Women’s Basketball Awards

The Big Five announced its women’s basketball award winners for the 2019-20 season. Temple forward Mia Davis won the Player of the Year Award while Villanova forward Maddy Siegrist was chosen as the Rookie of the Year. Wildcats Coach Harry Perretta earned the Coach of the Year Award in his 42nd and final season at the school.

Perretta’s team went 18 – 13 overall and was 11 – 7 in the Big East, tying for third place, this past season. Davis was a member of the All-American Athletic Conference first team averaging 18.8 points per game and added 10.2 rebounds per contest. She was an Honorable Mention All-American by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. The forward from Baltimore recorded 18 double-doubles ranking 6th in the country. Siegrist averaged 18.8 points per game and 8.9 rebounds in her rookie season winning the Big East Freshman of the Year award unanimously. She had 28 games scoring in double figures, including 41-point performance against La Salle which was the most points scored in a Big Five women’s game. Siegrist broke the program record for most points in a season by a freshman. Davis and Siegrist were the Big Five leading scorers.

Villanova and Temple, coached by Tonya Cardoza, shared Big Five title with a 3 – 1 record in the city series. It was the 18th City Series title for Perretta and the Wildcats.

Kayla Spruill of La Salle was selected as the Most Improved Player. She averaged 11 points per contest while adding 6.1 rebounds. Spruill had 19 games posting double figures and was second on the team in points and rebounds. By converting 79 of 97 free throws (81.4%) the sophomore was the Big Five Leading Free Throw Shooter.

Kendall Grasela of Penn was selected as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The senior has a 3.47 GPA as a nursing major. She led the Ivy League in assists (4.4 average) and assists to turnover ratio.

The All-Big Five First Team selections were: Mia Davis, Temple; Mary Gedaka, Villanova; Maddy Siegrist, Villanova; Eleah Parker, Penn; and Kayla Padilla, Penn.

The All-Big Five Second Team consisted of: Ashley Jones, Temple; Marissa Mackins, Temple; Claire Jacobs, La Salle; Kendall Grasela, Penn; Katie Jekot, Saint Joseph’s.

Bridget Herlihy of Villanova and Phoebe Sterba from Penn earned Honorable Mention recognition.
