Villanova Wins Under Friday Night Lights, Temple Wins Second Straight, Penn Sets Record at Harvard
It was a Friday night non-conference game for the #13 Villanova Wildcats. They hosted LIU and won 35 – 7. Quarterback Daniel Smith figured in all five touchdowns for the Wildcats. He threw 4 scoring tosses, two to Changa Hodge and one each to Simon Bingelis and Jaaron Hayek. Smith ran it in for the final Nova score. The defense limited LIU to 183 yards of total offense. Special teams contributed by setting a tone when Tyler Will had two big hits on kick returns. It was the second consecutive week that Nova scored 35 points. Delaware will visit on Saturday for the annual Battle of the Blue game.
The Temple Owls became bowl eligible the week before. There could be no let downs in order to stay in contention for the American Athletic Conference Eastern Division title. The Owls did not. It was a tough game, but the Cherry and White played from ahead and defeated the Tulane Green Wave 29 – 21. Quincy Roche led the Owl defense getting 2 sacks on the final possession for Tulane as they tried to even the score. Roche also had 12 tackles, forced a fumble and recovered it. Temple faces a key game next week in deciding the title as they face division leading Cincinnati on the road.
The University of Pennsylvania set a program record with the win in Boston. It was the first time Penn recorded three consecutive wins at Harvard. Karekin Brooks led Penn with 102 yards rushing. He now ranks third in all-time rushing yards with 2,752. It was the fourth 100-yard game for Brooks this season and the 10th of his career. Nick Robinson scored on a 3-yard run in the first quarter, the first time the Quakers scored in the opening quarter in Ivy League games this year. The game winning score happened Robinson looked for Rory Starkey, Jr. The pass was tipped, but Starkey, Jr. extended and caught it for a touchdown. The Crimson drove to the Penn 10-yard line, but were denied on fourth down. Penn faces arch rival Princeton in their final game of the season.
