PHILLY COLLEGE WOMEN’S SOCCER WEEK IN REVIEW

Saint Joseph’s Wins City Battle; Drexel, La Salle and Temple Get First Conference Win

Week of September 18 – 24, 2018

DREXEL 4 – 3 – 4 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 CAA

Results – Lost 1 – 0 vs. James Madison at the Vidas Sports Complex, Won 2 – 1 (2 OT) at the College of Charleston

Summary – The Dragons got a goal from Shaelyn McCarty, her 5th of the season, in the 106th minute to give her team their first CAA win of the season at Elon.  After the Phoenix took a 1 – 0 lead, the Dragons bounced back with a goal form Morgan Rees to send the game into extra time.  It was a bounce-back win after Drexel lost its conference opener to JMU.  Goal keeper Libby Baeza made 4 saves in each game.

Next Game – 9/30 at William & Mary

LA SALLE 6 – 2 – 1 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 1 – 0 (2 OT) at Davidson, Lost 2 – 1 vs. Saint Joseph’s at McCarthy Stadium

Summary – The Explorers posted an A10 win in overtime when Madison Bower scored 49 seconds after the second overtime period began.  It was her 6th goal of the season, and propelled her into a tie for first place in the nation for game winning goals.  La Salle could not keep the momentum going as they dropped a city and conference game against the visiting Hawks of Saint Joseph’s.  LSU took the lead on a goal by Molly O’Brien, but gave up two second half goals.

Next Game – 9/27 at Duquesne

PENN – 6 – 1 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 1 Ivy League

ResultsTied 0 – 0 (2 OT) vs. Harvard at Rhodes Field

Summary – University of Pennsylvania goal keeper Kitty Qu posted her 6th shutout of the season, and extended her career solo shutout record to 15.  Penn is 6-1-1 this season which matches the best start in program history.  They have blanked the opponent in six of eight games this year, and have a 290 minute streak of not giving up a goal.

Next Game – 9/29 at Cornell

SAINT JOSEPH’S  6 – 3 – 2 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 0 vs. St. Louis at Sweeney Field, Won 2 – 1 at La Salle

Summary – The Hawks got second half goals from Dakota Mills and Taylor Ryan earning a come from behind win over their city and A10 rival Explorers.  Ryan got the game-winner off a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.  Saint Joe’s earned their first conference win in bounce-back fashion after losing the opener to St. Louis, who scored two second half goals to get win.

Next Game – 9/27 vs. Richmond at Sweeney Field

TEMPLE 5 – 6 – 0 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 2 – 0 at SMU, Won 3 – 2 (OT) at Houston

Summary – The Owls split their Texas road trip.  After dropping a 2 – 0 decision at SMU, the team would get a win in overtime at Houston.  The golden goal was scored by Morgan Morocco that handed to Cougars their first home loss of the season.  Morocco also scored the goal that sent the game into extra time.  Freshman Gabriela Johnson netted the first Temple goal.  Earlier in the week the Owls gave up two second half scores to the Mustangs.

Next Game – 9/20 vs. UCF at the Temple Sports Complex

VILLANOVA 6 – 4 – 0 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 Big East

Results – Lost 2 – 0 vs. Providence at the Higgins Soccer Complex

Summary – The Wildcats fell in their Big East opener as the Friars scored twice in the second half.  The goals came within 8 minutes of one another.  Villanova out shot Providence 17 – 11, but the opponent had a 4 – 3 edge in shots on goal.  Ciara Terabasso led Nova with 4 shots, 2 on goal.
