La Salle Wins Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship

The La Salle Explorers wear the 2017 Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer crown doing so in exciting fashion defeating the VCU Rams 1 – 0 in overtime.  The golden goal came in the 108th minute of play from Maci Bower, assisted by sister Madison Bower.  This was the third conference title in women’s soccer for the Explorers, and they earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The game winner was set up when Madison Bower took a long pass from Jess Shanahan and back heeled it to Maci Bower who drove the ball off the leg of Rams goal keeper Audrey Sanderson inside the near post to end the game.

La Salle goal keeper Larisa Zambelli tied an Atlantic 10 Championship record for most saves in a single game with 14.  She was named the Tournament Most Outstanding Player.  The effort was needed as VCU had a 29 – 12 advantage in shots, 14 – 7 edge in shots on goal.  None got past Zambelli.

Also named to the all-tournament team was Madison Bower, Maci Bower, Kristin Haugstad, and Katherine Hennessey.

The tournament bracket will be released on Monday and will determine the Explorers opponent and location.  The first two rounds will be on campus sites.

This was the 17th win of the season for La Salle, coached by Paul Royal, against 3 losses and 2 draws.
