PhillyCollegeSports.com Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

Michelle Nwokedi, Penn – Nwokedi scored 22 points and had 16 rebounds to lead Penn in the win at Temple.  She snared 8 offensive and 8 defensive rebounds while blocking 4 shots.  Nwokedi scored 6 of the next 8 points for the Quakers to seal the victory.

Games The Week of January 19 – 25, 2016

LA SALLE 3 – 16 Overall, 0 – 6 Atlantic 10, 0 – 3 Big Five

Results –   Lost  79 – 70 at Saint Louis

Summary –  Jasmine Alston posted in new career-high in assists dishing out 15 in  addition to 12 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double.  Amy Griffin put in a game-high 26 points against the Billikens.

Next Game – 1/27/2016 vs. Dayton at The Tom Gola Arena

PENN 12 – 2 Overall, 1 – 0 Ivy League, 2 – 1 Big Five

Results –  Won 60 – 54 at Temple

Summary – With the win the University of Pennsylvania posted its seventh consecutive victory, and the 11 non-conference wins marks a program record.  Michelle Nwokedi led the Quakers with 22 points and 16 rebounds, and scored 6 of the last 8 Penn points to seal the victory at Temple.  Sydney Stipanovich also added 16 rebounds.  Both Stipanovich and Nwokedi had 8 offensive and 8 defensive boards.  As a team the Red and Blue pulled down 59 rebounds, 28 on offense.  Penn meets Villanova with a share of the Big Five title on the line.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 9 – 10 Overall, 3 – 4 Atlantic 10, 2 – 1 Big Five

Results – Lost 77 – 66 vs. Saint Louis, Lost 71 – 61 vs. Dayton both at The Hagan Arena

Summary – Chelsea Woods matched her career-high 20 points in both games.  In each contest the Hawks fell behind, then clawed their way back getting to within one possession in the fourth quarter only to fall short.

Next Game – 1/27/2016 at St. Bonaventure

TEMPLE 11 – 7   Overall, 5 – 2 AAC, 2 – 2 Big Five

Results – Lost 60 – 54 vs. Penn at McGonigle Hall

Summary – Despite being out rebounded the Owls stayed in contention by forcing 17 turnovers.  After falling behind by 10 points in the 3rd quarter Temple went on a 13 – 4 run to take a 50 – 49 lead with 3:40 to play.  Penn scored the next 5 points to take control.  Alliya Butts scored 16 points to lead the Cherry and White.  Tanaya Atkinson added 14 points.

Next Game – 1/26/2016 at Tulane

VILLANOVA  12 – 7 Overall, 6 – 3 Big East, 2 – 1 Big Five

Results – Lost 57 – 51 vs. Georgetown at The Pavilion

Summary –  The Wildcats four-game winning streak came to an end with a home court loss to the Hoyas.  In a close contest the visitors took the lead for good on a layup by Dionna White, who had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.  Alex Louin and Meghan Quinn led Villanova with 11 points each.  Quinn had 7 rebounds while Louin pulled down 6 boards and had 4 assists.  The non-conference schedule ends when Nova hosts Penn.  A possible share of the Big Five title will be on the line.

Next Game – 1/26/2016 vs. Penn at The Pavilion

DREXEL 9 – 9 Overall, 5 – 2 CAA

Results – Won 54 – 53 at Delaware, Won 53 – 49 at Northeastern

Summary – The Dragons went on a two-game road trip and brought home two wins.  Sarah Curran made a three-pointer to provide the game winning points against rival Delaware.  She posted 21 in the contest.   Curran added 13 points at Northeastern.  Drexel was paced by Meghan Creighton who scored a season-high 17 points while Rachel Pearson netted 12.  At Boston the Dragons allowed the Huskies only 7 fourth quarter points in getting the come from behind victory.
