Saint Joseph’s Holds Off Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, PA. 12/12/2015 – The Saint Joseph’s Hawks had a strong inside game and it was enough to earn a 53 – 46 win over the Drexel Dragons at the Hagan Arena.  Hawks forward Sarah Fairbanks matched a career-high scoring 23 points in the game.  The senior shot 8 of 10 from the field, was a perfect 7 of 7 from the free throw line, and pulled down a game-high 9 rebounds.

Saint Joe’s had a 32 – 20 advantage in points in the paint.  The front line in addition to Fairbanks contributed as Adashia Franklyn scored 8 points and Sarah Veillux added 5 points.

It was a tight game where eight points was the largest lead.  Saint Joe’s tied the game at the 3:55 mark on 2 free throws by Fairbanks.  Franklyn scored just over a half minute later to give the Hawks a lead they would not relinquish.  But Drexel was never that far away.  The Dragons made 5 of 18 from distance.

A jumper by Rachel Pearson with 6:41 left in the fourth quarter cut the deficit to 41 – 39.  Saint Joe’s pulled away behind a 6 – 1 run, and Drexel got no closer than 4 the rest of the way.

Pearson scored 20 points to lead the Dragons making 8 of 18 from the field, 2 of 8 from beyond the arc.

For the game Saint Joseph’s made 38.3% from the floor, but did not connect on any of their 9 three-point attempts. Drexel made 28.3% of their shots.

The Hawks improve to 4 – 4 on the season and ready themselves for a Thursday home game at 11:30 am against Iona.  The Dragons are 3 – 5 and prepare for a Battle of 33rd Street match against Penn at the DAC.
