The Dragons Down the Northeastern Huskies 72 – 61 at The DAC
PHILADELPHIA, PA. 2/27/2026 –
The Drexel Dragons women’s basketball team is getting hot in the closing weeks of the season. Drexel downed Northeastern 72 – 61 for their fourth win in a row and nine of their last ten. In the CAA the Drexel moves into a tie for second place with Stony Brook. There are more games ahead of them, but the Dragons are becoming a dangerous team in the upcoming postseason tournament.
“I think we are a team that has been consistently dangerous as we head into the postseason, just where we finish, how to play, and what we do,” said Drexel Coach Amy Mallon. “One of the things we said from day one is we really judge ourselves on how we finished last year. It’s been our motivation every day when we step on the court. And this group shows up. That’s a dangerous piece for us when we have that that type of confidence in what we do. Then we feel really good that we can face anybody and challenge them.”
The team is well aware of their position in the league, and have an understanding of what is needed going forward.
“It’s something you keep an eye on, especially when you know you are finishing out the year,” said Drexel guard Laine McGurk. “Everything is important at this point, but I think just going into everything with the same mentality. Every possession matters, just as much as the next. So, just understanding that and knowing that it’s coming to an end soon. We want to keep going as long as we can.”
The Third Quarter Turnaround
Drexel started slowly falling behind at the beginning, but got their game together for a tie after both the first and second quarter. Then in the third quarter the Dragons turned the game in their direction winning the stanza 25 – 11. The key run was a 16 – 3 run over the last five and a half minutes, It turned a 39 – 36 lead into a 56 – 39 advantage.
“In the first half we were not seeing everything fully, kind of rushing things,” McGurk said. “We weren’t getting great looks. In the third quarter, we just let the offense work for us.”
The Drexel team is showing what they need to do to overcome slow starts.
“I think I’ve seen that especially in the last five, six games we’ve played,” Mallon said. “We were just on the road at Hampton and William & Mary and one we were down fourteen. I’m seeing them less rattled in those moments, understanding what they need to do. And tonight that’s how I felt. The key thing is that we were continuing to grind at the things we needed to do and then adjust. We started doing that coming out in the third quarter, and that really helped us.”
What the Numbers Say
