Hawks Win 9th Straight Game Against The Bonnies
January 22, 2025 –
The Saint Joseph’s Hawks came into the game short handed. Talya Brugler (hand) and Emma Boslet (foot) did not play due to injury. The Hawks did have Laura Ziegler and Mackenzie Smith and the team stepped up. A strong start gave Saint Joseph’s an 83 – 56 win over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies at the Hagan Arena.
The Pivotal First Quarter
St. Joe’s scored the first 13 points of the game. The Bonnies did not get their first basket until the 3:26 mark of the opening period. Meanwhile the Hawks started hot shooting 56% from the floor and forced 7 turnovers by the opposition. After ten minutes of play SJU led 22 – 2. Zoe Shaw got the only two points in a short jumper.
Saint Joseph’s stretched the lead to 41 – 15 at halftime. St. Bonaventure did begin to run their offense, but did not stop St. Joe’s from running theirs.
What the Numbers Say
Ziegler recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 17 points and 15 rebounds while handing out a game-best 6 assissts. Mackenzie Smith scored a game-high 20 points, but she left the game with an ankle injury in the third quarter. Two other Hawks recorded double digits in points as Rian Stokes and Gabby Casey put in 13 points each. Kaylie Griffin dished out a career-high tying 4 assists.
SJU shot a hot 55% (33 of 60) from the field on a cold night on Hawk Hill. They added 8 of 20 three pointers. For the game the lowest shooting percentage by the Hawks was 53.8% that happened in the second and fourth quarter. The eight Hawks turnovers represented a season-low.
After quarter number one the Bonnies improved and ended the game shooting 23 of 55 (41.8%). Shaw set her career-mark in scoring with19 points (8 of 14, 2 of 4 from distance).
The Hawks won the rebound battle 34 – 24 and 6 – 3 off the offensive glass.
