Freshman Running Bank Scores 4 Touchdowns in 42 – 24 Victory

Last week in the LIU game freshman running back David Avit showed he was ready to play a larger role in the Villanova running game. This week he showed how large a role in setting personal-bests with with 183 yards and 4 touchdowns leading the Wildcats to a 42 – 24 road victory over the Stony Brook Seawolves.

Villanova trailed 24 – 14 in the third quarter. At that point Avit would stamp his imprint on the game. He would score a running touchdown on the next two Wildcats possessions. The first came on a one-yard rush at the 7:08 mark closing the gap to 24 – 21. Later, Villanova started a drive after a punt at their 20 yard line. Avit turned the game around on that possession with a 59-yard touchdown run with 3:47 remaining in the quarter. In the fourth quarter he took the ball 72-yards to the house. His other touchdown was one-yard in the second quarter. Over the past two games the freshman back ran the ball 37 times for 343 yards.
In addition back Ja’briel Mace scored his first career touchdown on a 21-yard carry to end the scoring.
What the Numbers Say
Villanova finished with 280 rushing yards. Stony Brook out up 163 yards on the ground led by Roland Dempster who had 115 yards on 24 attempts and 3 touchdowns.
Quarterback Connor Watkins ran for 27 yards and threw for 152. He had a 26-yard scoring toss to Lucas Kopecky, a football newcomer. He played on the lacrosse team. Villanova had 19 passing plays and 39 runs.
Villanova senior linebackers Shane Hartzell and Richie Kimmel had 11 and 10 tackles while Brendan Bell led the way with 15 tackles. It is the second time this season that all three starting linebackers recorded double-digits in stops.
Up Next
Villanova is 5 – 1, 2 – 0 in the league. The team posted its first win when trailing at halftime since a November 20, 2021 game against Delaware, by a 21 – 13 score. The Wildcats have reached the mid-point of the campaign. They have six games remaining on the schedule. There is a bye week before a road game at Maine on October 19.
