Penn Falls to Delaware in Season Opener

Delaware Scores Late to Win 29 – 22

The season opener for the Red and Blue ended in a loss to the Delaware Blue Hens 29 – 22. Delaware got a 13-yard touchdown from Jo’Nathan Silver with 1:44 to play to get the victory.

The University of Pennsylvania held a 16 – 15 lead going into the fourth quarter, but fell behind when Hens quarterback Ryan O’Connor threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jake Thaw. Later in final fifteen Penn came back starting a drive 38-yards away from the Delaware goal line with 10:33 remaining when Francesco Barnes blocked the punt. A holding call and a 13-yard run by Quakers running back Malachi Hosley set the ball at the Blue Hens 13 yard line. Quarterback Aidan Sayin completed a 12-yard pass to to Julien Stokes for a first and goal. It took four tries, but Sayin got the ball across the goal. The extra point gave Penn a 22 – 21 advantage as 6:02 showed on the clock.

Delaware took over and completed a 10-play, 75-yard drive in 4:18 to take the lead on the Silver run to the endzone, and added a two-point conversion for the final margin of victory.

The Quakers had one last chance driving the ball to the Hens 17-yard line when Sayin completed a pass to Jared Richardson covering 58-yards. After a penalty Ty Davis intercepted a pass to end the threat.

What the Numbers Say

Both teams moved the ball with Penn gaining 393 yards to 375 for Delaware.

Sayin completed 17 of 28 for 228 yards, throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions. Five catches went to Richardson who gained 98 yards and a score. His longest catch and run was the late 58-yarder. Bisi Owens hauled in the other scoring toss. Stokes had 7 receptions for 91 yards. Hosley ran for 176 yards on 26 carries. The Quakers had an extra point blocked and was unsuccessful on a two-point conversion.

O’Connor threw for 309 yards attempting 43 passes completing 25 and three touchdowns. Silver rushed 11 times for 56 yards. Phil Lutz caught 7 passes for 144 yards scoring twice.
