Philly College Athletes at the US Olympic Track & Field Trials – Day Five

It is Day Five of the Olympic Track & Field trials. The representatives of Philly colleges and the city took to the track attempting to be on the team going to Paris. Let’s look at the details from today as five athletes are taking their next step.

Men’s 800m

This event saw many locals trying to qualify in this event. There were four heats run. The top six finishers in each heat plus the next three fastest times advanced to the semifinal round. Sean Dolan of Villanova ran in the fourth heat where he finished 8th with a time of 1:48.42. He will not move on placing 32nd overall. Shane Cohen from Lower Moreland High School also in the event and same heat. Cohen running for Virginia will be in the semifinals as he placed third in the heat and tenth overall covering the distance in 1:46.83. Cohen moved up from seventh place to qualify. His last 100m split was :12.59 the fastest in that segment of the race. Darius Smallwood of Penn State and Pottstown, PA ran in the second heat. He finished fifth in the heat, and sixth overall hitting the finish line in 1:46.48. Smallwood had the lead going into the last 100m, but had to hang on the make the next round. Sam Whitmarsh of Texas A&M turned in the best time of all runners posting a 1:46.13.

Women’s 1500m

Villanova alum Angel Piccirillo (Class of 2016) turned in a time of 4:08.25 to get through on time. The runners took part in three heats. The top seven in each heat plus the next three fastest times advanced. Piccirillo ran splits of 1:06.40, 1:08.00, 1:05.68, and :48.17 over the last 300m. She ran the 11 fastest time. Elle St. Pierre has the top time of 4:06.41.

Men’s 400m Hurdles

Ryan Matulonis participated in the fifth of five heats in the opening round. The top five in each heat plus the next two best times would run in the semifinal round. The hurdler wearing the Red and Blue stripes took third place and will run again. Matulonis ran :50.73. He had the 16th best time. In the heat Matulonis started fast running in second place. His time of :03.76 at Hurdle Two was his fastest. Coming down the stretch there was a line of five runners that finished within a tenth of a second of one another. Caleb Dean of Texas Tech turned in the best time of :49.45.

Women’s 400m Hurdles

Aliya Garozzo made it two Penn 400m Hurdlers qualifying in the event both men’s and women’s. Garozzo ran in Heat Four and advanced finishing fifth with a time of :58.12. The top five in each of the five heats plus the next two fastest times would run in the semifinals. The best hurdle time for Garozzo was :04.36 at Hurdle Two. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone had the best qualifying time of :53.07. The semifinal round is on Saturday.
