La Salle Wins in Overtime in the A10 Women’s Basketball Tournament

The La Salle Explorers, the 8 seed, advance to the quarterfinal round with an overtime victory over the #9 Duquesne Dukes 72 – 68 in a second round game in Richmond, their first postseason win since 2017. Claire Jacobs led the Explorers with a game-high 27 points.

It would take an extra five minutes. The teams were on the see-saw, each getting a one-point lead on each score over the last 2:21. Jacobs tied the game in regulation with a free throw as 5 seconds showed on the clock. Both squads had a chance, but did not convert. On to overtime.

With the scored tied at 62 La Salle grabbed the advantage and scored 10 of the next 16 points over the final three minutes to get the win. Jacobs and Haleigh Hill had 4 of those points each.

Jacobs tied her career-high getting 9 rebounds. Kayla Spruill posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Hill scored a collegiate-best 14 points and had 9 caroms. The foul line was a friend to the Explorers who made 18 of 25. The Dukes shot 9 of 13 from the charity stripe.

Libby Bazelak led Duquesne with 19 points. Precious Johnson contributed 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Amaya Hamilton scored 14 and Diamond Bragg added 10 points, and pulle ddown 9 and 8 boards.

It may have taken a few minutes longer, but Coach Mountain MacGillivray earned his first postseason win. They go for another against top-seeded Dayton in the quarterfinal round.
