Atlantic 10 Postpones Fall Sports Seasons

The Atlantic 10 Conference announced today that fall sports competitions and championships will be postponed due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. The sports affected are men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, men’s and women’s cross country, and volleyball. Saint Joseph’s Hawks and La Salle Explorers compete in the league.

The Explorers won the men’s and women;s cross country championships last season. The Hawks are the defending league champions in field hockey.

The conference intends to have a schedule for the affected sports compete during the 2021 spring semester. The schedule and further plans will be announced at a later date.

However, the league disclosed that a mid-September “look-in” window could allow for a shortened schedule if the risk of the virus is significantly reduced. That would require medical and institutional protocols that would assure the safety of all concerned.

The league looked at the option of delaying the start of the seasons. The decision to not play was made because the health risk, safety and well-being of the entire campus community. The “look-in” window provides the same flexibility as a delay, the league said.

The schedules for the winter sports, specifically men’s and women’s basketball, are unchanged at this time. Since the A-10 is basketball-centric it was decided that it is too early to make a decision about those schedules.
