Since It won’t be long before well be seeing some All American selections, I thought it might time to pick a different post season team, so following is the first annual Boards Double Initial All American squad. We’ll lead off with three players who will possibly make the real and proper AA team: Soph Devon Dotson, from Kansas, and seniors Payton Pritchard, (Oregon), along with Tres Tinkle, (Oregon State). All three have excellent numbers, with the 6-2 Dotson looking like a 2-and-doner. Then, two players from smaller schools that deserve recognition: Six foot junior Jhivvan Jackson, UTSA, the country’s second leading scorer (27 points per game), along with Terry Taylor, a 6-5 junior from Austin Peay, who averages 22 ppg. Naturally, these players will be coached  by Wisconsin’s Greg Gard, assisted by Northwestern mentor, Chris Collins….Hopefully, all that wasn’t too trivial.

Big win for Saint Joe’s last night. They overcame gigantic leads by Davidson to win on a three by Cameron Brown with less than a second on the clock. And the Hawks played without Ryan Daly.

What’s going on at North Carolina? The Tar Heels have now dropped six games in a row by a  grand total of 19 points. The streak includes a heart-breaking O.T. loss to bitter rival Duke (at home). Old Roy just might be getting some heat right now.  Carolina’s next game is at Louisville on Saturday.

After tonight at DePaul, which won’t be easy, Villanova faces one of those real tough tests at Xavier on Saturday. The Musketeers (17-9) are out of the top 25, which is unusual, but are tough at home and the place will be jumping. X is led by Atlantic City H.S. product Naji Marshall, a 6-7 junior, who leads the team in points, assists and steals. Nova won 68-62 at the Finn on December 30.

Very likely the best little man in the country is 5-8 junior Terrell Gomez, who plays at Cal State Northridge. The junior point guard averages 20.3 per game, hits on 94 % of his free throws, and is 43 % on 3-point shots.  The Matadors are in the Big West Conference.

This and That:  The Currys are no longer the highest scoring brother combo in Division 1 history. Marquette’s Markus and Jordan Howard, from Central Arkansas, have scored 5,082 points.  Stephen and Seth had 4,736….Kansas coach Bill Self, who was also head man at Tulsa and Illinois,  has recorded 23 straight 20-year wins. Most were legitimate too….  At Syracuse, 6-5 soph Buddy Boeheim, son of his coach, is averaging  15.6 ppg , including 40% on 3’s….Other than the service schools, Villanova is one of the few teams that has its players and coaches with hands-over-hearts during the anthem. Nice touch…,.Butler is at Seton Hall tonight in that crazy Big East, where anybody can beat anybody else….More upcoming: La Salle hosts Fordham tonight, while Temple has UConn tomorrow, then Drexel welcomes Hofstra; Over the weekend, St. Joe’s is at George Mason and La Salle is at George Washington on Saturday. Penn visits Dartmouth and Harvard on Friday and Saturday.
