Philly Men’s College Soccer Week in Review – October 7th Edition

It was a winning week where five of the six teams posted a victory.  The week featured league play for the most part.  This is where the season gets interesting.

The University of Pennsylvania, Villanova, and Drexel played one time this week in conference and won.  Penn started Ivy League competition defeating Cornell.  Villanova defeated Xavier.  Drexel went on the road and brought back a win over Elon.  The Quakers scored three times on the Big Red.  Ben Stitz and Brandon Bartel scored their first collegiate goal, and Joey Bhangdia added his fifth of the season in the 64th minute, the eventual game-winner.  Bhangdia has 3 game-winning scores. Villanova continues its great defensive play getting its first Big East win over Xavier 1 – 0.  It was the fifth straight shutout for the Wildcats at the Higgins Soccer Complex.  Nova has surrendered 3 goals in 10 games this season.  Drexel broke a two-game losing streak.  The Dragons trailed 1 – 0 before Rodrigues da Palma and Chris Donovan found the back of the net.  The Donovan game-winning goal, his sixth this season, came in the 78th minute.

The Temple Owls and the La Salle Explorers concluded and undefeated week with both earning a win and a tie.  Temple defeated Old Dominion 1 – 0 on a Leandros Lillis goal with just 55 seconds left to play.  It was the first collegiate goal for Lillis.  In American play Brandon Johnson netted his first goal in the 8th minute, but the game would get even just 5 minutes later in the 1 – 1 draw vs. Cincinnati.  The Owls are undefeated in their last four home games.  La Salle had to battle back against NJIT and got a draw on a Colin Bateman goal in the 67th minute.  In a city battle the Explorers got 2 early goals and defeated Saint Joseph’s 2 – 0.  Pat McCarthy found the back of the net in each game.  Goalie Brett Werner made a season-high 9 saves in the Saint Joe’s game.

Saint Joseph’s came up winless in games against Princeton and La Salle.  The Hawks gave up a season-high 6 goals to the Tigers.  On 20th and Olney the Hawks had a 21 – 7 shot advantage, but could got get the ball over the line.

In upcoming games Drexel hosts Hofstra, and James Madison comes to the Main Line to play Villanova in a non-league game.  The other teams go on the road. La Salle goes to Rhode Island, Penn travels to Columbia, Saint Joseph’s will be at Hartford, and Temple is at St. John’s.

Week of October 1 – 7, 2019

DREXEL 4 – 5 – 1 Overall, 2 – 2 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 2 – 1 at Elon

Summary – The Dragons trailed 1 – 0 before getting their goals.  The win in North Carolina ends a two-game losing streak.

Next Game – 10/15 vs. Hofstra

LA SALLE 6 – 4 – 1 Overall, 2 – 1 – 0 Atlantic 10   

Results – Tied 2 – 2 (2 OT) vs. NJIT, Won 2 – 0 vs. Saint Joseph’s

Summary – Colin Bateman had a goal and an assist over the week.  Franc Gamiz Quer scored the first goal of the game against Saint Joseph’s.  La Salle is unbeaten in their last four games.  The Explorers swept the weekly Soccer Six Awards with McCarthy being named Player of the Week, Werner the Defensive Player of the Week, and Gamiz Quer winning the Rookie of the Week honor.

Next Game – 10/9 at Rhode Island

PENN – 4 – 3 – 1 Overall, 1 – 0 – 0 Ivy League   

ResultsWon 3 – 2 vs. Cornell

Summary – Penn is 1 – 0 in the Ivy League for the first time since 2016.  Cornell fell behind 3 – 1, but got a proximity goal.  The Red and Blue needed a save at the end of the game to hold on for the win.

Next Game – 10/13 at Columbia

SAINT JOSEPH’S  4 – 7 – 0 Overall, 0 – 3 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 6 – 3 vs. Princeton, Lost 2 – 0 at La Salle

Summary – Saint Joseph’s put three goals on the board against Princeton with Daniel Morales, Dontrim Namani, and Daryus Lake getting scores.  The Hawks outshot the Explorers 21 – 7, but no shots got past the goal line.

Next Game – 10/8 at Hartford

TEMPLE 3 – 5 – 1 Overall, 0 – 1 – 1 AAC

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. Old Dominion, Tied 1 – 1 (2 OT) vs. Cincinnati

Summary – The goal by Lillis against Old Dominion came off a cross from Lukas Fernandes.  Goalie Simon Lefebvre recorded his third shutout of the season.  Fernandes launched 8 shots toward the Cincinnati net.

Next Game – 10/8 at St. John’s

VILLANOVA 6 – 3 – 1 Overall, 1 – 1 – 1 Big East

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. Xavier

Summary – Villanova earned its first Big East victory of the year when Theo Quartey scored in the 80th minute.  Goalie Carson Williams made 5 saves in getting his seventh clean slate of the season.
