Philly Women’s College Soccer Week in Review – September 23rd Edition

Villanova posted a win and a tie in their week against Ivy League competition.  Nova tied Princeton at 2 in New Jersey.  The Wildcats followed that with a 1 – 0 win over the visiting Brown Bears.  Brice McInroy scored against the Tigers with Allison Breed getting the assist.  Breed got the second goal against Princeton. The tandem teamed up for the game winner over Brown. 

The University of Pennsylvania Quakers went 1 – 1 that included 1 – 0 victory over the local rival Temple Owls on second half goals by Katherine Larson in the 51st minute followed three minutes later when Emma Loving found the back of the net.  Earlier in the week Penn fell behind 2 – 0 to the two-time CAA defending champion Hofstra Pride.  The Red and Blue rallied, but fell short.  Kitty Qu made 6 saves giving her 200 career saves.

Drexel and Temple got a win and a loss over the course of the week.  The Dragons won at home over Seton Hall on the strength of Annalena O’Reilly posting her first collegiate goal.  Drexel fell 4 – 0 at Columbia.  The Owls beat Wagner, but lost to Penn.  Hailey Gutkowski registered a goal and an assist in the Wagner game, and has a team-lead tying 6 points on the season.  Goal keeper Morgan Basileo made 7 saves to give her 68 saves, and an average of 7.56 saves per game, which is tops in the American.

La Salle and Saint Joseph’s opened Atlantic 10 play.  Each team lost the conference opener as the Explorers fell to the George Washington Colonials 3 – 1.  The Hawks went on the road to play the Davidson Wildcats dropping a 1 – 0 decision. 

All the schools face conference foes over the upcoming week.  Drexel faces two-time defending CAA Champion Hofstra in a road game.  La Salle goes to Richmond while Saint Joseph’s travels to Olean, NY to meet Saint Bonaventure in the second Atlantic 10 game for both squads.  Temple begins the American portion of their schedule hosting Cincinnati.  Villanova meets Xavier at home in their Big East opener.

Week of September 17 – 23, 2019

DREXEL 4 – 3 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. Seton Hall, Lost 4 – 0 at Columbia

Summary – Drexel gave up no shots on goal to Seton Hall.  In New York three second half goals by the Lions were too much for the Dragons to overcome who got 5 shots.

Next Game – 9/26 at Hofstra

LA SALLE 4 – 4 – 1 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 3 – 1 vs. George Washington

Summary – Danielle Rooney had the lone La Salle goal against George Washington. Maci Bower had 5 shots, 3 on goal for the day.

Next Game – 9/26 at Richmond

PENN – 5 – 2 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsLost 2 – 1 vs. Hofstra, Won 2 – 1 vs. Temple

Summary – In the loss to Hofstra the lone goal for Penn was scored by Katherine Larson, her second of the week.

Next Game – 9/28 at Harvard

SAINT JOSEPH’S  3 – 5 – 1 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 1 – 0 at Davidson

Summary – The Hawks are in the midst of a 4-game losing streak.  The trip to Saint Bonaventure caps a five-game road swing.

Next Game – 9/26 at Saint Bonaventure

TEMPLE 2 – 4 – 3 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 AAC

Results – Won 2 – 1 vs. Wagner, Lost 2 – 1 at Penn

Summary – Goals by Hailey Gutkowski and Gabriela Johnson propelled the Owls past Wagner.  Emma Wilkins scored against Penn with Gutkowski getting the assist.  Johnson and Gutkowski lead the team in scoring with 6 points each.

Next Game – 9/26 vs. Cincinnati

VILLANOVA 4 – 3 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0

Results – Tied 2 – 2 (2 OT) at Princeton, Won 1 – 0 vs. Brown

Summary – Goal keeper Rebecca Gartner had 11 saves over the week.  She made 9 at Princeton and had 2 more against Brown.

Next Game – 9/29 vs. Xavier
