Saint Joseph’s Avery Marz Honored By USBWA, Amy Griffin Records A Triple-Double

Philly Women’s College Basketball Player of the Week

Avery Marz, Saint Joseph’s – The Hawks senior guard has been named the 2018 Pat Summitt Most Courageous Award recipient for 2018.  She has overcome a medical condition to return to the court averaging 3.1 points per game and goes an average of 8 minutes per contest.  She is playing and that is the ultimate victory.

DREXEL 7 – 4 Overall, 0 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 64 – 58 at Saint Joseph’s

Summary –  The Dragons won another game against a Philadelphia opponent.  Drexel forced 22 Saint Joe’s turnovers, 14 by steals, en route to the victory.  Megan Marecic scored a career-high 20 points.  Bailey Greenberg scored 19 points and set a career-mark with 5 steals. Aubree Brown had a career-mark with 17 points.  Kelsi Lidge set a record with 5 steals.

Next Game – 12/21 vs. Cornell

LA SALLE 5 – 6 Overall, 0 – 0 Atlantic 10, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 71 – 48 at Delaware State

Summary – Amy Griffin posted her first career-triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.  Her rebound and assist total were career-records.  Three other Explorers scored in double-figures led by Adreana Miller who scored 17 points.  Deja King added 11 points, a season-high.  Shalina Miller had 10 points.

Next Game – 12/20 vs. Villanova at the Gola Arena

PENN – 3 – 4 Overall, 0 – 0 Ivy League, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results –  Idle

Summary –

Next Game – 12/22 vs. Rhode Island at the Palestra

SAINT JOSEPH’S  5 – 5 Overall, 0 – 0 Atlantic 10, 0 – 3 Big Five

Results – Lost 64 – 58 vs. Drexel at the Hagan Arena

Summary – The Hawks started out well, but turnovers proved costly as they had 22 against Drexel.  Alyssa Monaghan and Chelsea Woods scored 16 points each.  Saint Joe’s is on a 5-game losing streak.  Maybe a trip to Florida is the cure.

Next Game – 12/20 – 21 vs. Princeton and Florida at the Gator Holiday Classic

TEMPLE 8 – 3 Overall, 0 –  American, 2 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 83 – 77 vs. Marist at McGonigle Hall

Summary – The Owls were not looking back at Villanova nor forward to South Carolina, the defending national champion.  They kept focused on Marist and came away with a win on a second half surge.  Emani Mayo scored 11 points, all in the fourth quarter, and her three with les than a minute to go was the decisive basket.  Mia Davis had a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds.  Lena Niang set a career-record scoring 18 points making 6 three-pointers.  Tanaya Atkinson scored a team-high 25 points, but did not post a double-double for the second time this season.
