Some early observations about the locals, with early being the key word: Villanova looks to be as good as expected, with Mikal  Bridges adding to his already solid reputation. Temple is showing how much Josh Brown was missed, and Quinton Rose is developing into a real offensive threat. Saint Joe’s suffered another serious injury (Fresh Kimble) but freshman Taylor Funk is shooting the lights out, averaging 20.3, 13 of 22 on 3’s. La Salle’s B.J.Johnson is off to a great start, but after Pookie Powell, more consistent scoring is needed. Penn sophs AJ Brodeur and Ryan Betley are looking good, and Antonio Woods’ return is a definite plus. Max Rothschild continues to contribute. Drexel pulled off a great win against Houston, and Missouri transfer Tramaine Isabell has really picked up the offense.

Penn has one of the craziest schedules in the country. Starting on November 25, the Quakers play five straight away games including tilts at Villanova and at Dayton. Then, on December 27, they begin a home stand of nine consecutive games, with Saint Joe’s and Temple among the visitors.

Here’s an idea: Why don’t the NCAA and the NBA get together and form a One-and Done league? It would be much easier for the pro scouts in selecting their draft picks, and it would definitely level the competition for college hoops. Just a thought.
