Jasmine Alston – La Salle – Alston recorded a triple-double in La Salle’s opening game win over Miami (Ohio) in the UNC Wilmington Thanksgiving Classic.  Alston scored 15 points, took down 18 rebounds which is a career-high, and had 12 assists.  For the tournament the senior guard had 24 points, 26 rebounds, and 18 assists in the Explorer wins.

Games The Week of November 22 -28, 2016

LA SALLE 3 – 3 Overall,  0 – 0 Atlantic 10, 0 – 1 Big Five

Results –   Won 79 – 70 vs. Miami (Ohio);   both in the UNC Wilmington Thanksgiving Classic

Summary – Jasmine Alston led the Explorers to victory against Miami with a triple-double scoring 15 points, taking down 18 rebounds, a career-high, and dishing out 12 assists.  Amy Griffin scored 23 in the contest.  La Salle used a 22 – 2 run in the third quarter to take control.

PENN 1 – 3 Overall,  0 – 0 Ivy League,  0 – 1 Big Five

Results –  Lost 57 – 53 vs. Saint Joseph’s at the Palestra

Next Game – 11/30 at Lafayette

SAINT JOSEPH’S 2 – 4 Overall, 0 –0 Atlantic 10, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 57 – 53 at Penn; Lost 71 – 56 vs. BYU; Won 79 – 67 vs. New Mexico – last two games at the University of New Mexico Thanksgiving Tournament

Summary – The Hawks got their first win of the season in a Big Five battle against Penn.  For details read Saint Joseph’s Earns A Big Five Win Over Penn.  The next morning the team was on an airplane to New Mexico to compete in the Thanksgiving Tournament.  The Hawks split out west losing to BYU, then defeating host New Mexico.  Chelsea Woods scored a career-high 24 points making 9 of 12 from the field and was a perfect 6 for 6 from the foul line in the second game out west.  Sarah Veilleux scored a career-high 17 points against the Lobos.  Over the holiday Alyssa Monaghan scored 19 points and distributed 7 assists.

TEMPLE 3 – 1,  Overall, 0 – 0 AAC, 2 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 71 – 68 vs. Quinnipiac at McGonigle Hall

Summary – The Owls came back from a 7 point deficit in the fourth quarter taking the lead with 40 seconds left on a three pointer by Alliya Butts, who scored 24.  Feyonda Fitzgerald iced the game with 2 free throws at the 19 second mark.  Fitzgerald added 19 points and 6 assists.

Next Game – 12/1 at Hartford

VILLANOVA  1 – 4 Overall, 0 – 0 Big East, 0 – 0 Big Five

Results – Lost 93 – 85 vs. Troy, Lost 68 – 66 vs. VCU at The San Juan Tipoff In Daytona Beach

Summary –  The Wildcats were defeated in both tournament games.  They kept it close, but fell behind and could not overcome the opposition.  Against Troy a 21 – 4 run by the Trojans in the third quarter proved to be the difference.  In the VCU game Villanova stayed within striking distance, but did not get the lead late.  It was a big week for Alex Louin who scored 32 points.   She set a career-mark in made free throws with 12, and Kelly Jerkot scored a career-best 12 points.  Megan Quinn posted 22 points and 8 rebounds against VCU.

Next Game – 11/30 vs. La Salle at the Gola Arena

DREXEL 3 – 2 Overall, 0 – 0 CAA

Results – Lost 78 – 66 at Bucknell

Summary –  The Dragons could not keep the momentum of the Syracuse win as they fell at Bucknell.  The Bison made 30 for 50 field goal attempts (60%), the Dragons made 25 of 66 (44.6%) which would usually be enough.  Bucknell had a huge edge in rebounds 32 – 20.  Sarah Curran led Drexel with 19 points, a season-high.  Due to early foul trouble she had 17 of those points in the second half.  Meghan Creighton scored 11 points and handed out 5 assists.
