Philly College Men’s Soccer – Special 2016 Post-Season Edition

The men’s soccer season for 2016 concluded this week.  The Villanova Wildcats and the La Salle Explorers played in their conference tournaments.  Villanova advanced to the semifinal round before being eliminated at Butler.  La Salle lost their firs round conference game at Fordham.

BIG EAST TOURNAMENT

#3 Villanova 3 #6 DePaul 1 Penalty Kicks – Big East Quarterfinal

#2 Butler 1 #3 Villanova 0 (2 OT) – Big East Semifinal

The 3rd seeded Wildcats advanced to the semifinal round by virtue of penalty kicks that decided a scoreless draw with the DePaul Blue Demons at the Higgins Soccer Complex.  Goalie Will Steiner stopped three of four attempts by the Blue Demons.  During the game Steiner had to make one save, and that came in the second overtime period.  Zach Zandi, Shane Bradley, and Lucas Hodges were successful on their penalty kicks to propel Villanova to the semifinal round.

Facing the second seeded Butler Bulldogs it was another stellar defensive effort for the Wildcats.  The game went into a second overtime, but this time Villanova fell 1 – 0 on a goal by David Goldsmith in the 106th minute of play. The Cats had a 12 – 11 edge in shots, and they dominated the second half getting eight away.  However, it was the shot by a Bulldog that got past Will Steiner, who made 3 saves in the contest.  Villanova finishes the season with a 10 – 7 – 3 record.

ATLANTIC 10 TOURNAMENT

#6 Rhode Island 3 #3 La Salle 1

The Rhode Island Rams advanced to the Atlantic 1o Semifinal round defeating the La Salle Explorers, whose season ends with a 10 – 8 – 1 record.  The Rams got two scores within 32 seconds late in the first half to take control of the game.  The Explorers fought back getting to within one on a goal by Matt Robinson who scored in the 80th minute, Jake Saba got the assist.  Rhode Island answered in the 83rd minute on a goal by Ryan Bailey, his second of the game, to take control.  Mike Kirk made three saves for the Explorers.  Robinson ended the season as the La Salle leader in points with 16 this season.
