Saint Joseph’s Wins Overtime Thriller Against Villanova, Penn Wins Third Straight

Week of September 6 – 13, 2016 Games

DREXEL 4 – 4 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. Fairfield at Vidas Field, Lost 5 – 0 at #23 Rutgers

Summary – Melissa Dunn scored in the 61st minute while Dragons goal keeper Christina Ogunsami made six saves in the win against Fairfield.  At nationally ranked Rutgers the Dragons were shutout and five Scarlet Knight players scored.  Rutgers outshot Drexel 22 – 4 in Piscataway.

Next Game – 9/18 at Penn

LA SALLE 2 – 4 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 0 at #12/16 Penn State

Summary – The Explorers fell to the defending national champion Nittany Lions.  Both goals were scored in the first half.  Penn State had 10 corner kicks.  La Salle managed 8 shots in the game, 2 were on net.

Next Game – 9/15 vs. Villanova at McCarthy Stadium

PENN – 3 – 1 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League

ResultsWon 2 – 1 vs. Lafayette at Rhodes Field, Won 2 – 1 at Delaware

Summary – The Quakers won a pair of 2 – 1 games and extended their winning streak to three games.  Penn scores their two goals in the first half in each game, then held on to gain the victory.  Olivia Blaber, Riann Winget, Emma Loving, and Emily Sands registered the goals for the Red and Blue.

Next Game – 9/16 vs. Towson at Rhodes Field

SAINT JOSEPH’S  5 – 1 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Result – Won 3 – 2 (2 OT) vs. Villanova at Sweeney Field, Tied (2 OT) at Rider

Summary – The Hawks had to play a two extra periods twice and came away with a win and a tie.  Lindsay Walder scored 46 seconds into the second overtime to give SJU the win against Villanova.  The Hawks erased a two goal halftime deficit getting scores from Emily Gingrich and Taylor Ryan.  The game-tying goal by Ryan came in the 84th minute.  At Rider Meghan DiPippa opened the scoring in the 14th minute.  Saint Joe’s had a 26 – 7 edge in shots.

Next Game – 9/16 at Columbia

TEMPLE 2 – 5 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 American

Results – Lost 3 – 0 at Princeton, Lost  3 – 1 at Binghamton

Summary – The Owls gave up 3 goals in each contest over the week.  Princeton remained unbeaten scoring all of their goals in the first half, and held a large advantage in shots.  Temple gave up two second half goals in the loss at Binghamton.  Kayla Cunningham netted the only goal for the Owls who were outshot 15 – 6.

Next Game – 9/16 at Mount Saint Mary’s

VILLANOVA  1 – 6 – 0 Overall, 0 – 0 Big East

Results – Lost 3 – 2 (2 OT) at Saint Joseph’s,  Lost 2 – 0 vs. Lehigh at the Higgins Soccer Complex

Summary – The Wildcats took a two-goal lead at halftime against the Hawks of Saint Joseph’s, but gave up the tying goal in the 84th minute before falling on the second overtime period.  Kristin Barbour and Mandi Wilson netted the Villanova goals.  The Wildcats finished the game against Lehigh with 18 shots, 9 on goal, but none crossed the goal line.

Next Game – 9/15 at La Salle
