Philly College Women’s Basketball Week In Review – Games of November 23 – 30, 2015

Caroline Coyer, Villanova – In three games this past week Coyer averaged 19 points along with 6.3 rebounds and 5 assists per game.  In the win against Saint Joseph’s she went over the 1,000 career-point mark.  At the Lehigh Christmas City Tournament Coyer was named the MVP as she scored 22 and 21 points respectively and added a total of 14 rebounds and 7 assists.

Games The Week of November 24 – 30, 2015

LA SALLE 0 – 6 Overall, 0 – 0 Atlantic 10, 0 – 1 Big Five

Results –   Lost 61 – 53 at Wake Forest, Lost 69 – 53 vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Lost 86 – 58 vs. Miami, last two games in the Miami Thanksgiving Classic

Summary –  The Explorers took to the road on a southern swing playing Wake Forest and in the Miami Thanksgiving Day Classic.  La Salle fell in all three games.  Ashanti Freeland scored a career-high 14 points at Miami.  Micahya Owens scored in double figures in all three games totaling 49 points on the trip.

Next Game – 12/2/2015 at Howard

PENN 4 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 Ivy League

Results –  Won 49 – 48 vs. Colorado State at The Palestra

Summary –  The Quakers won a squeaker and extended their winning streak to four games.  Michelle Nwokedi finished with 25 points, 10 in the last 8 minutes, and added 8 rebounds.  Sydney Stipanovich had a double-double scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.  With her 4 blocked shots Stipanovich became the all-time leader in program history with 197.

Next Game – 12/5/2015 vs. Navy at The Palestra

SAINT JOSEPH’S 1 – 3 Overall, 0 – 0 Atlantic 10, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results – Lost 55 – 49 at Villanova, Won 70 – 67 at Temple

Summary – The Hawks were active in city series play playing both games on the road.  Saint Joe’s fell at Villanova, then used a late rally to edge Temple.  Ciara Andrews was the leading scorer in both games scoring 18 on the Main Line and a career-high 27 on North Broad Street.  Chelsea Woods contributed a career-high 20 points against the Owls.

Next Game – 12/2/2015 at Lehigh

TEMPLE 2 – 3   Overall, 0 – 0 AAC, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results – Lost 58 – 56 at Quinnipiac, Lost 70 – 67 vs. Saint Joseph’s at McGonigle Hall

Summary – It was a tough two games for the Owls as they dropped close contests.  Temple made a late comeback at Quinnipiac nearly erasing a 10-point deficit, but fell two points short.  The Cherry and White saw Big Five rival Saint Joseph’s rally in the fourth quarter to pull off a 70 – 67 win at McGonigle Hall.  Feyonda Fitzgerald continued her hot scoring getting a team-best 13 and 19 in each contest.

Next Game – 12/2/2015 vs. Villanova at McGonigle Hall

VILLANOVA  4 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 Big East, 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 55 – 49 vs. Saint Joseph’s at the Pavilion, Won 67 – 55 vs. Drexel, Won 65 – 44 vs. Lehigh, last two games at the Lehigh Christmas City Classic

Summary –  The Wildcats registered three wins over the week defeating Saint Joseph’s in a Big Five contest, then won the Lehigh Christmas City Classic Tournament.  In the Holiday Tournament Villanova beat city rival Drexel and the host Mountain Hawks.  Caroline Coyer led the Wildcats.  Coyer scored 14 against Saint Joe’s which put the senior guard over the 1,000 career-point mark.  At the tournament Coyer was named the MVP scoring 22 and 21 points to go along with a total of 14 rebounds and 7 assists.  Freshman guard Adrianna Hahn also garnered a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Next Game – 12/2/2015 at Temple

DREXEL 2 – 3 Overall, 0 – 0 CAA

Results – Lost  67 – 55 vs. Villanova, Lost 58 – 50 vs.  Montana  in the Lehigh Christmas City Classic

Summary –  The Dragons dropped both games in the Lehigh Christmas City Classic.  Alexis Smith was named to the All-Tournament Team after nearly getting a double-double in the loss to Villanova with 11 points and 9 rebounds.  Sarah Curran was consistent getting 13 points and 5 rebounds in both games.

Next Game – 12/3/2015 vs. Vanderbilt at the DAC
